Personnel: Robert Stillman (tenor saxophone, piano, drums, tambourine); Robert Stillman; Luke Temple (guitar); Peter Rende (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, pump organ); Adam Chilenski (acoustic bass, electric bass). Recording information: Avast! Studio, Seattle, WA (2004). The eclectic New York musician Robert Stillman's recordings defy easy categorization. This set, recorded in Seattle, conjures avant-garde jazz, the faux-19th-century musical patina of the early Band, and Tom Waits's fairground carny ambience. "The Dance 1" is an eccentric, herky-jerky waltz that envelops Stillman's pretty saxophone melody in an increasingly macabre atmosphere, "Half-Luke" has a French boulevardier atmosphere, and the hesitant piano of "That's Enough" has a shambling, closing-time feel. Not quite jazz, not quite post-rock...post-jazz, maybe? Whatever. Robert Stillman's Horses is a thoroughly engaging instrumental album consisting of seven lengthy pieces featuring Stillman's lyrical, legato tenor sax phrasing and his bandmates' low-key accompaniment, heavy on non-traditional keyboards like pump organ and clavinet. The songs unfold organically rather than establishing themes as jump-off points for solos in the jazz tradition; instead, rhythmic variety is the key, as the record moves from the waltz time of the two-part "The Dance" to the countrified shuffle of "Half-Luke" and onward to the space rock feel of the lengthy centerpiece, "Love Theme." Mellow, but with too much melodic and rhythmic interest to be considered an ambient chillout record, Robert Stillman's Horses is difficult to classify but easy to love. ~ Stewart Mason Robert Stillman's Horses Music | List Price | $13.98 (You save $2.49) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Rock CDs, Jazz Instrument, Alternative, Classics (Silents / Avant Garde), Jazz | | Label | Mill Pond | | Orig Year | 2006 | | All Time Sales Rank | 254194 | | CD Universe Part number | 7014049 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Jan 10, 2006 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Personnel | Adam Chilenski - acoustic bass, electric bass Peter Rende - piano, Fender Rhodes piano, pump organ Robert Stillman - tenor saxophone, piano, drums, tambourine

Robert Stillman's Horses
$10.15 The title of Kelly Overdrive's "827" comes from an address where three of the original band members grew up. Back then 827 served as the birthplace of the band. The music is an eclectic mix of rock with various influences:New Rock meets older flavors. The songs on the album are about life in the old neighborhood and how dealing with lost relationships help a man to move on with his life as he leaves "827". We now invite you to read the biography of the beginnings of "Kelly Overdrive":Before Fairmount was conquered by the yuppie, it was a working class neighborhood of mainly Irish and Italian families who proudly called it home. The Battestelli Family was one such clan. They and their business establishment, Terry's Kitchen, were a neighborhood staple. It was a focal point for the neighborhood and the four Battestelli Brothers: Eric, Henry, Jay, and Jim. Besides having a knack for baseball, all four brothers could play music. Jay, Henry, Danny Flaherty: a Fairmount neighborhood friend, and a South Philly guy with a penchant for surf guitar, named Paul Curcio, started a band called St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Cool name, cooler sound. The young bucks fused their roots: punk, surf, metal, and grunge, while honing their skills above the family restaurant. Eventually, Danny left and was replaced by youngest brother Jim Battestelli on drums. Gigs happened along with dreams of making it big. But, youth plus success tends to yield tension and trouble. Thus, the guys began to ponder their future together and slowly but surely they drifted apart. Enter oldest brother, Eric. Of all the brothers, he was the only one formally schooled in music. He had an idea for a band - with the intensity and energy of the 'Grenadines' - but one that would incorporate his musical influences: 70's rock and pop, singer/songwriter style, and classical music. The guys needed a new name. Kelly Drive and the Schuylkill River were a baseball throw from the restaurant. It was a gathering place for the family. For Eric, it was also a place where he found writing inspiration, as well as the love of his life. So, to pay ...
