Urging the listener to imagine waking up in Paris, the liner notes to Breakfast Club: Paris tout this mix as the soundtrack to a whimsical Parisian adventure. Some might believe that the music contained on the disc is the actual soundtrack to Paris, but this could easily have been packaged as the soundtrack to New Delhi, Brisbane, or any other "exotic" location. The 16 downtempo chillout numbers here are guaranteed to relax and refresh. ~ Rob Theakston
Urging the listener to imagine waking up in Paris, the liner notes to Breakfast Club: Paris tout this mix as the soundtrack to a whimsical Parisian adventure -- but this is more like bait to lure the unsuspecting into a tourist trap while passing the experience off as "cultural." Some tourists might believe that the music contained on this disc is the actual soundtrack to the city, but that notion is far from the truth. Packaged here are 16 downtempo chillout snoozers guaranteed to relax and refresh, but not necessarily inspire. This could easily have been packaged as the soundtrack to New Delhi, Brisbane, or any other "exotic" location. There are several hundred other chillout comps that package and present the music far better than this. Proceed with caution. ~ Rob Theakston

| | Luther Vandross I Know CD (1998)
Breakfast Club: Paris music CDs
$12.69 I KNOW was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance. "I Know" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
For his first album on Virgin, R&B icon Vandross decided it was time to reinvent his music. That's just what he does on I KNOW, his 14th release. Over the course of this recording, everything from rap to funk to house to jazz turns up in the musical mix, but whatever the flavor of the cut, every track here is 100 percent Luther, as the singer delivers the kind of full-bodied, emotive performances that are his trademark.
"Nights in Harlem" is laced with rap and funk, as Vandross engages in a bit of nostalgia, recalling his boyhood. Joined by Cassandra Wilson, Vandross indulges his jazz jones on one of the album's highlights "I'm Only Human." With the help of "Little" Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzales, our man even dips his toe into the waters of house music on the propulsive dance-floor thumper "Are You Using Me?" Long-time Luther fans needn't fear, though; there are still plenty of straight-up R&B tunes around which Vandross can wrap his celebrated tonsils.
Engineers include: Ray Bardani, Dave Saronson, Stan Wallace.
Personnel: Luther Vandross (background vocals); Karen Bernard (vocals, background vocals); Marcus Miller (guitar, drum programming); Michael Ciro, Michael Oakman, Ira Siegel, Nick Moroch, Phil Hamilton (guitar); Dean Parks (acoustic guitar); Michael Thompson, Paul Jackson, Jr. (electric guitar); Jesse ...

Breakfast Club: Paris album
$9.35 Pianist, vocalist, composer Mark Moultrup announces the release of his first CD, "Just Suppose" on his von Moultrup Music Inc. record label, (ASCAP).The 14 song disc features jazz piano and vocals, and includes Dianna Krall bassist Paul Keller on several tracks. Whether navigating the challenging harmonic contours of a Michel LeGrand composition ormoving at warp speed over one of his own compelling tunes such as "Scree Scramble," MarkMoultrup is a skilled pianist and stylistic vocalist with an engaging zeal for a variety of soundscapes. At his command is a diverse repertoire of songs, which are often invested with imaginative classical turns and scintillating dollops of bebop. A hallmark of Moultrup's creativity is his ability to recast a popular standard, giving it an entirely new gloss of tender explosions and nuance. "Stella by Starlight," a mainstay in his portfolio, may bear only a slight resemblance to its original form after Moultrup applies a fresh interpretation, sometimes removing the cloying sentimentality in exchange for a robust, more redemptive rendering. Moultrup has a palette ...
