Though he's often classified as a fusion guitarist, Charlie Hunter has none of the penchant for overplaying that frequently accompanies practitioners of the genre. Recorded in New Orleans, COPPEROPOLIS has a vibrant looseness and good humor that manifests itself in pieces like "A Street Fight Could Break Out" and the second-line beat of "Swamba Redux." Hunter's sidemen, horn and keyboard player John Ellis and drummer Derrek Phillips, supply an empathetic bedrock accompaniment that colors the guitarist's lyrical, deceptively simple phrasing on tracks like "Drop the Rock" and the band's Latin- and New Orleans-influenced treatment of Thelonious Monk's "Think of One."
Charlie Hunter Trio (Guitar): Charlie Hunter (8-string guitar); John Ellis (Wurlitzer piano); Derrek Phillips.
Personnel: Charlie Hunter (guitar); John Ellis (melodica, bass clarinet, tenor saxophone, Wurlitzer organ); Derrek Phillips (drums).
Recording information: The Truck Farm Studios, New Orleans, LA.Down Beat (p.76) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "It's essentially an enlightened blowing session for the trio and it succeeds admirably as such with each musician exhibiting individual ideas while maintaining the group's unique ensemble sound." JazzTimes (p.76) - "Hunter's trio has the beating heart of a jazz group -- one that's particularly good at combining studio resourcefulness with live energy." | | Bob Mintzer Bop Boy CD (2002) (Import) Japan
Copperopolis album
$47.29 Recorded over two days in 2002, Bop Boy was previously only available in Japan on the Cheetah label. Thanks to Explore and their excellent catalog of diverse jazz and classical recordings, it is now available in the United States as well. Unlike Bob Mintzer's '80s offerings on Cheetah (Source and Papa Lips), the band used on this session is a quartet made up of star talent: bassist Eddie Gómez, the elegant pianist Steve Kuhn, and drummer Steve Gadd. On first glance it might appear that Gadd is out of place among these more subtle members of the rhythm section. Being a consummate professional as a studio musician, Gadd is an excellent jazz drummer adding grace, subtlety and tension to a very sophisticated rhythm section. Mintzer a generation younger than Gómez, and Kuhn leads this band through killer arrangements of a fine batch of standards and a trio of top-flight originals. Beginning with Kenny Dorham's and Wynton Kelly's "Blue Bossa," the swing quotient is high here. Kuhn is at his most muscular on this hard bop gem, pushing his minors and thirds right into the rim shots by Gadd. Mintzer's solo is full of deep blues feeling and economy. Mintzer wrote the title track; it is what it claims to be: ...
| | Shirim Klezmer Orchestra Pincus & The Pig: A Klezmer Tale CD (2004)
Copperopolis CD music
$13.99 Following their successful klezmerization of The Nutcracker Suite, the Shirim Klezmer Orchestra teamed up with renowned author/illustrator Maurice Sendak for Pincus and the Pig, a delightful klezmer recasting of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. As with Prokofiev's classic, each of the characters is identified with a specific instrument, and Sendak not only provides the story and illustrations, but is also the narrator. Sendak's story and delivery are both filled with humor and Yiddish flavor. Also included is a small illustrated booklet replete with Yiddish glossary and a sheet of stickers of the characters, presumably for the kids. The musical arrangements by Shirim are just as wonderful as Sendak's contribution. The Pincus and the Pig tale is followed by several tracks without Sendak: klezmerized versions of well-known pieces by Rimsky-Korsakov, Brahms, Mahler, and Satie that are just as great as their transformation of Peter and the Wolf. This is probably the first Tzadik release that seems targeted for kids, but this is a fun album for just about anyone, whether they're kids or Jewish or neither. ~ Sean Westergaard

| | Hendrik Meurkens Amazon River CD (2005)
Copperopolis music CDs
$14.45 Liner Notes for Amazon RiverAmazon River is the culmination of an enduring love affair between Hendrik Meurkens and Brazilian music. The affair began while Hendrik was growing up in Germany. Brazilian music embodied a depth of beauty and simplicity that touched his very soul. "I've always been attracted to music that focuses on melody and harmonic beauty," he explains, "That could be Bach or Bird, but for me the perfect music is Brazilian because of its sympathetic emotional context."After graduating from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Hendrik moved to Brazil in the early 80's where he immersed himself in its music and culture. It was during these days in Rio that the soul of Amazon River was born. But it wasn't until a 2004 tour of Germany and Finland that he conceived this recording, which focuses on all aspects of the Brazilian sound. On the tour, Hendrik was joined by of some of the most talented Brazilian musicians: pianist Helio Alves, drummer Duduka Da Fonseca and bassist Nilson Matta, who was an early collaborator from Hendrik's Rio days. But it was special guest and co-producer Oscar Castro-Neves who was the catalyst for making this more than a quartet recording. Hendrik explains that "Oscar is more than a guitarist and singer. He's a producer and arranger as well. He molded and developed my ideas and created such beautiful string arrangements as well."Not surprisingly, Castro-Neves is as enthusiastic about his collaborator. "He has an awesome technique, a great sense of improvisation and a very personal way of navigating complex harmonies. Adding to that is his wonderful artistry on the vibraphone, another instrument that Hendrik commands with great grace and expression. His soul was born somewhere among the trees and the rivers of Brazil so native are his performances."It was a special honor for Hendrik to have Dori Caymmi as a ...
