The irrepressible Ernie Andrews continues his late-career renaissance with How About Me. Produced by saxophonist Houston Person, Andrews fronts a quintet with Person, guitarist Terry Evans, pianist and arranger Phil Wright, Richard Simon on bass, and Frank Wilson on drums. The material ranges from all over the place, but most comes from the 1940s and '50s. Andrews is in fine form on cuts like the Eddie Lane and John Jacob Loeb classic "Boulevard of Memories," Leonard Feather's fine jump blues, "She's Got the Blues for Sale," and the Duke Ellington nugget "It Shouldn't Happen to a Dream." The title cut is one of Andrews' finest performances in recent years -- with his version of the Irving Berlin masterpiece "How About Me." This is a solid date form start to finish. ~ Thom Jurek

Ted Brown Free Spirit CD  (1989)

How About Me album
CD $14.55  Audio Samples
A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop standards, but Brown, O'Brien, and ...

Eric Alexander Battle CD  (2005)

How About Me music CDs
CD $13.85  3 stars Audio Samples
Tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander and alto saxophonist Vincent Herring pair up for two nights of fireworks at Smoke on this 2005 release. Unlike the various two-tenor battles that have appeared on numerous releases over the decades, the contrast provided by featuring two different reeds is easier on one's ears. The furious take of "Blues Up and Down" (penned by the two-tenor team of Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt) is a long workout starting with Alexander's ...

Don Braden Workin' CD  (2006)

How About Me songs
CD $13.89  5 stars Audio Samples
With a wealth of tenor saxophonists among his generation, Don Braden might get lost in a crowd when compared to those who have signed to major labels or have expensive publicity firms. But Braden has been a model of consistency as a leader over his career, including this 2005 performance recorded at Cecil's, featuring his trio with organist Kyle Koehler and drummer Cecil Brooks III. Blending elements of hard bop and soul-jazz, Braden launches the set with a driving take of "You Can't Hide Love," previously a hit for the R&B band Earth, Wind & Fire. He has equal success with another R&B favorite, the ballad "The Closer I Get to You," by transforming it into a viable soul-jazz vehicle, backed by Koehler's ...

Eric Alexander It's All In The Game CD  (2006)

How About Me album
CD $13.85  5 stars Audio Samples
Over the dozen years since his debut recording as a leader, Eric Alexander has developed into one of the most important tenor saxophonists of his generation. Joined once again by one of his favorite pianists, Harold Mabern, along with bassist Nat Reeves and drummer Joe Farnsworth, Alexander kicks off this studio affair with a gritty hard bop treatment of "Where or When." "It's All in the Game" dates from the early part of the 20th century (written by future Vice President Charles Dawes), yet this is hardly a dated melody, as Alexander gives his best with a lush ballad treatment, while Mabern (who suggested the tune) incorporates subtle ...

How About Me CD music
CD $18.59
While the Scorpions have certainly had enough radio and MTV hits over the years to warrant an expansive "best-of" set (or in their case, countless "best-of" sets), to title such a collection of their's No. 1's is a bit of a headscratcher. And all because of one, teeny tiny reason -- the group hasn't scored numerous number one hits anywhere in the world (let alone 32 of 'em, which is how many selections are included here). ...

How About Me songs
CD $12.05  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Vance Thompson is the leader and chief arranger of the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra, a conventional but high-quality big band. On Blues Man from Memphis, the orchestra performs eight compositions by pianist Donald Brown, who not only plays piano and electric piano but arranged "The Scenic Route to Donny's Heart." His music is advanced hard bop that swings but is not overly predictable, covering many moods. In addition to Brown, the guest soloists on various selections include Greg Tardy on soprano and tenor, Stefon Harris (who is very impressive during his four appearances) and bassist John ...
