This 1988 release by Harold Budd epitomizes the ambient genre. Each track has a similar, airy sound, which envelops the listener, and layers of legato keyboards make the music float. THE WHITE ARCADES is a subtle, minimalist work that seeks to create a picture of serenity, eschewing common song structures. This album is largely mono-dynamic, and swaddles the listener in warm blankets of sound.
Each track on THE WHITE ARCADES is marked by memorable motifs. For example, the repeating bell pattern on "The Room" is not only tuneful, but ultimately entrancing. Similarly, "Algebra of Darkness" features some delicate and understated piano lines, artfully set against a series of fluffy keyboard chords. The title track overflows with colorful waves of sound with an austere, but poignant, piano melody. Like the music of collaborator Brian Eno, Budd's compositions resonate purely and simply.
Recorded at Palladium, Edinburgh, Scotland; Cocteau Twins Studio, London, England; The Wilderness, Suffolk, England between June and December, 1987.
Solo performer: Harold Budd (various instruments).

| | Harold Budd Serpent (In Quicksilver)/Abandoned Cities CD (1984)
White Arcades
$14.29 Recorded back when "ambient" meant Brian Eno rather than enervated techno, the LP and EP collected here were originally released on Budd's own Cantil label in the early '80s. The Serpent (In Quicksilver) consists of five solo keyboard works and one very interesting collaboration between Budd and pedal steel player Chas Smith. ...

| | Black Sabbath Paranoid CDs (1971) (Import) Bonus CD; Bonus DVD; Advd; Deluxe Edition; United Kingdom
White Arcades
$31.89 PARANOID proved to be Black Sabbath's most focused, consistent, and successful record. Leaving behind the amorphous, extended jams of their debut for focused songs and a more structured sound, Black Sabbath virtually wrote the book on heavy metal with the ominous, unforgettable riffs, thunderous rhythms, and dark themes on this release. There are some up-tempo rockers, the famous title track for one, but for the most part PARANOID oozes along like a bad dream, as on the slinky, creepy opener, "War Pigs," or the lumbering thud of "Iron Man" (which boasts one of the most indelible electric guitar riffs in rock history).

For many years, the sort of non-idiomatic improvisation practiced by groups such as AMM was a lonely, sparsely populated genre. However, by the '90s the music began to seep into the knowledge base of younger musicians, and soon a day didn't pass without a new non-jazz-oriented free improv release. One of the few musicians who was treading that post-AMM path prior to this outbreak was the Swiss percussionist/electronicist Günter Müller, and his work with the cooperative trio Nachtluft is strikingly ...
