| | Dream Brother: The Songs Of Tim & Jeff Buckley CD
Taking its cue from David Browne's book of the same name, DREAM BROTHER explores the music of Tim Buckley and his son, Jeff Buckley, through interpretations by other artists. Both extremely gifted singer/songwriters with strikingly good looks, highly distinctive voices, and adventurous musical sensibilities, the two also shared early demises, giving their personas an undercurrent of dark romance and tragedy. The melancholy and exuberant sides of the Buckleys' sounds are presented here; the Earlies evoke the regret of the senior performer's "I Must Have Been Blind" with their spare take, and Adem gives a very faithful acoustic reading of Jeff's haunting "Mojo Pin," while the Magic Numbers harmonize through a beautiful version of Tim's "Sing a Song for You" and Micah P. Hinson offers up a jaunty rendition of Jeff's "Yard of Blonde Girls." The real revelations here are largely with Jeff's tunes, as Tim Buckley's work has been covered quite a bit over the years, most notably on the SING A SONG FOR YOU tribute album, which serves as an excellent companion to this compilation.

This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well as unreleased cuts ...

| | Barry & Holly Tashian At Home CD (2002)
Dream Brother: The Songs Of Tim & Jeff Buckley songs
$13.69 Barry Tashian and Holly Tashian look as happy on the front cover of At Home as they sound on this vibrant folk/country album from the veteran couple. The six-page CD insert has notations on each of the 12 selections as well as an interesting essay on how the music was "recorded live with no 'fixes in the mixes.'" The album's simple quality makes it very appealing, from Felice Bryant's "We Could," which opens the disc like a girl-and-guy version of the Everly Brothers, to a very interesting "A Man's Best Friend Is His Automobile." This is Barry giving the world a preview of a song also recorded for the Remains' reunion album, scheduled for later in 2002. Holly only co-writes two of the five originals with her husband, who has a different collaborator on each of his compositions. Holly Tashian calls their "These Little Things" the first shuffle they've written, though the couple has played them for years. Her "One More Me (The Cloning Song)" is an interesting take on "Dolly the cloned sheep," about a housewife who could use some extra help around the house. And who better but a carbon copy of herself? Imagine the possibilities -- this duo could duplicate themselves and be a country/folk version of the Mamas & the Papas. Barry Tashian draws from three different arrangements of two traditional tunes, and he blends "Whiskey ...
