Although his most famous records were made on Blue Note, Grant Green's IRON CITY, which was originally released on Cobblestone and later Muse Records, is arguably the best of his mid-period output. Recorded in 1967, this is a trio session with Big John Patton showing some amazing skills on Hammond organ and Ben Dixon on drums. Together they form the consummate organ trio that was the basis of the soul-jazz movement.
Green is masterful throughout, showing tremendous dexterity, expression, and fire. His dancing lines on exciting cuts like the nimble "Samba De Orpheus" and the ultra-funky "High Heeled Sneakers" are excellent examples of his influential single-line soling technique. Patton is exceptional as well; his powerful work on these and Nat Adderley's "Work Song" are prime examples of his own mastery of the organ. Of special note is the trio's moving rendition of the traditional "Motherless Child." In all, this is classic Grant Green, classic soul, and classic fun.
Grant Green is the great unsung hero of jazz guitar. In 1967 Green recorded this fine album Iron City which seemed to suggest that the guitarist was set to rise to the top but his career was derailed by drug addiction and such players as Wes Montgomery and George Benson came instead to prominence. Presumably recorded for then-thriving Prestige Records, Iron City was first issued in 1972 on Cobblestone Records and again in 1978 on Muse. Now that it is released on CD, a new generation of jazz listeners can hear how forceful the guitarist could be in the right funk. Five Four. 2006.

The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed by lengthy soloing, aspects of which Parker with Gillespie were perfectly suited for. Fact is, the situation surrounding the sonic capture and extended neglected shelf life of this performance was far from optimal. Symphony Sid Torin is the M.C., rambling as always, making repeated references to Dizzy "Jillespie" and misidentifying Max Roach as Sid Catlett on "Salt Peanuts." (Catlett does sit in on "Hot House" in a more supportive than demonstrative role.) The tracks with the brilliant Roach are on fire, particularly the super-hot "Salt Peanuts," with pianist Al Haig flying beside him. Haig is perhaps the most impressive musician. SOS JFK is the full-length debut from the Children's Hour, an effort rich in contemporary folk stylings and indie rock sensibility. Josephine Foster and Andy Bar are earnest in keeping things simple, basically picking up where their self-titled EP left off for a wistful set of melodies. Vocally and musically, the pair isn't overly ambitious. SOS JFK is appealing because its basic folk -- reflective, united, and warm -- and a move from the church to the studio captures such feeling. SOS JFK's instrumentation is polished with harps and pianos. Such a mix is sweeping and nearly matchless to Cat Power's quieter moments. Threads of Americana softly sway with Foster's lullaby-like vocals for the biographical "Adoption Day." This particular song was written for Bar's younger sister, who was adopted, and it's a delightful tribute. "Special King" and "Kindness of Strangers" are equal in poetics as jazz bits are sprinkled throughout these ballads. JSP continued its steady trawl through the discography of the swing era's most extroverted bandleader with Vol. 2: 1935-1940, the second four-disc box of Cab Calloway chronological recordings. Four years beyond his breakout with "Minnie the Moocher," Calloway was leading one of the most entertaining bands of the '30s (thanks in large part to his own frontman skills), and after the first session or two here, he began filling it with more musical talent. Ben Webster makes his first appearance midway through the first disc, for a May 1936 date, and though he only appears on 16 selections, his replacement -- Chu Berry -- lost barely a step filling in. On that same 1936 date, bassist Milt Hinton joined the rock-solid rhythm section (also including Leroy Maxey, and later Cozy Cole, on drums, and Benny Payne on piano), for a stint that would last to the end of the decade.
