Although this anthology, The J&S Years, is billed to Baby Washington and the Hearts, and is thoughtfully assembled and expertly annotated, it's a little deceptively titled, because Baby Washington -- the soul singer most famous for her 1960s recordings -- actually only sings lead on nine of these 25 tracks, most of which feature the Hearts without Washington. It's a long, convoluted story typical of the doo wop era (and thoroughly explained in the liner notes), but basically, the female vocal group the Hearts went through many lineup changes in the 1950s and 1960s. Washington was in an early version (though not the original one that had the 1955 Top Ten R&B hit "Lonely Nights"), and this compilation does have three 1957 Hearts tracks on which she sings lead, as well as half a dozen solo sides she cut for the J&S label in the late 1950s. Most of this CD, however, consists of Hearts recordings on which Washington doesn't sing lead, and quite a few on which she's not in the group at all. So it should be considered a Hearts collection rather than a Baby Washington one, even though it might appeal to some Washington fans for the inclusion of rare, early solo and group material with her on vocals. Whether you treat it as a Hearts or Washington release (or both), it's mostly energetic, and fair but not brilliant, late-'50s material on which doo wop, R&B, and early rock & roll intersected. There are scattered tracks postdating 1960, and even a couple soul tunes from 1970, but for the most part it's got a late-'50s doo wop sound. Though Washington's leads are strong, her voice was, at this point, much more impressive than the material she had to sing. On the later sides (done after Washington's departure), you can hear the group edge toward a more soul/girl group style; the best and most girl group-sounding, the 1963 single "Dear Abby," even made the lowest reaches of the Top 100, though it's derivative of the Ikettes' "I'm Blue." But J&S Years is a release for heavy doo wop collectors and Baby Washington completists, and not one you should expect to bear much resemblance to Washington's 1960s soul records. ~ Richie Unterberger
An hour-plus of fine female doo wop ballads, R&B rockers and soul from the Bronx, with many songs written by fabled Harlem matriarch Zell Sanders. The Hearts featured lead vocals by Baby Washington, Lezli Valentine, Betty Harris, Hartsy Maye and others, with some male back-ups from the Plants and wild sax, guitar and piano solos. These songs were recorded for the J & S, Zell's and Tuff labels. Baby Washington went on to have a very successful career at Sue Records. The Hearts span the divide between R&B & soul and therefore should appeal to fans of both genres. Thus is the first legitimate release of this material on CD. Sleeve note is by the erudite Mick Patrick. Ace. 2006. J&S Years Review

$9.59 Born with an unusual name that is eclipsed only by her talent, Yewande (pronounced E-wán-day) has been recognized as one of the most sought after independent artists in the world. Her socially charged brand of Alternative Soul music has captured audiences and critics alike from B. E. T. and MTV to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with a self-written/produced debut EP ("Evolution") that the world has been waiting for. "In a musical era claustrophobic with sameness emerges an artist who has chosen to be a voice on an avenue of sound less traveled in today's music. With increasing recognition in an industry where different doesn't always get the credit it deserves, Yewande has joined the ranks of today's pioneering artists (Eventlinks )". She seems destined to change how we look at life and listen to music, but it is likely her birth name (Yoruba for "reincarnation of grandmother") that has already placed her amongst the most progressive storytellers of our time. While classical training in voice and piano at Howard University and the Carnegie Mellon University Conservatory of Music polished her technique, it was Yewande's childhood dream to change the world. From the concert stage and lecture halls to remote villages across the globe, the world is just beginning to witness a dream fulfilled. While moments taking center stage with the likes of Black Eyed Peas, Enrique Iglesias, Michelle Branch, India.Arie, Sean Paul, A Simple Plan and Maroon 5 are memorable, nowadays you can find this award-winning singer-songwriter/producer turned lecturer and cultural activist using her voice to change lives. As an award-winning public speaker (APCA 2007 "Diversity Event of the Year"), her diversity and leadership lectures are bridging the gap between racial tolerance, cultural understanding and social justice for the MTV generation on college campuses across the United States of America.
