John Barry's fifth Oscar-winning score is a profoundly moving body of music, generally (though not entirely) elegiac in tone, very much like the movie for which it was written. It's also a bit of a mixed bag, occasionally falling back on material that will be familiar to fans of the James Bond movies that Barry scored during the early/mid-'60s. ...
| | Li'L Abner CD (2002) Original Broadway Cast; Bonus Tracks
Drama CD Soundtrack CD music
$8.99 Music composed by Gene De Paul. Lyrics written by Johnny Mercer.
Songwriter Johnny Mercer did not have much luck writing for Broadway, but the exception was Lil' Abner, based on the satiric Al Capp comic strip about the rural residents of Dogpatch. Mercer wrote the song lyrics to music by Gene DePaul, with whom he had worked on the movie musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. After the show opened ...

| | Paint Your Wagon CD (1969) Original Soundtrack
Drama CD Soundtrack songs
$7.59 The movie Paint Your Wagon was an attempt to update the plot of an old stage musical by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, with new songs by André Previn and Lerner. The soundtrack is a peculiar release; in purely musical terms, it would only be of interest to dedicated fans of Harve Presnell (who performs "They Call the Wind Maria") and Anita Gordon, who acquits herself well singing Jean Seberg's part on "A Million Miles Away Behind the Door." It is Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin, however, who do more of the singing here, and while they might not be of much interest musically, there is a certain "Golden Throats"-type allure to their songs. Neither reveals any hidden musical talents, though Eastwood does the better job of the two on his songs, particularly "I Still See Elisa." The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band also spent time working on the movie, both on camera and on the soundtrack, but their major surviving contribution is "Hand Me Down That Can O' Beans," in which they share the spotlight vocally with Lee Marvin and a male chorus; it adds nothing to their output. Harve Presnell's rendition of "They Call the Wind Maria" brings a suitably operatic approach to the piece, but it is marred by Nelson Riddle's overly ...

| | Thin Lizzy Life-Live CDs (1983)
Drama CD Soundtrack CD music
$13.59 Life Live? More like Life-less. After Thin Lizzy wrapped up their successful "farewell" tour, their second live album was issued. It was originally supposed to be issued during the tour, but extensive overdubbing and nitpicking pushed the album's release toward year's end, after the publicity from the tour had died down. The two-LP Life is not even close to being a worthy successor to its exceptional predecessor, 1978's classic Live and Dangerous. Instead of replicating the rough energy and spontaneity of Live and Dangerous, the overall sound of Life is reminiscent of their '80s studio albums -- polished pop gloss. An obvious reason for the album's failure is the fact that Lizzy's songwriting in the '80s was not on par with their '70s work, as evidenced by such tracks as "Angel of Death," "Thunder & Lighting" and "Renegade," among others. Older standards ("Jailbreak," "Are You Ready," ...
| | Ear-Bleeding Country: The Best Of Dinosaur Jr. CD (2001)
Drama CD Soundtrack music CDs
$9.09 Recorded between 1985 and 2000. Includes liner notes by Byron Coley.
Digitally remastered by Dave Donnelly (DNA Mastering Studios).
Dinosaur Jr. first emerged (as simply Dinosaur) from the Massachusetts punk scene in the mid-1980s with provoking, genre-bending-with-just-a-dollop-of-pop releases on stalwart indie labels Homestead and SST. With J. Mascis' hauntingly off-key half-growl, half-howl lurking under layers and layers of distortion, fuzz, and drone, they were locks to bend the ear of an adoring underground radio cult, but the longest of shots to garner million-selling records, let alone touch the pop charts. However, Dinosaur Jr. did all of the above, ruling college radio for almost a decade in the late-'80s and early-'90s, selling a ton of albums, even scoring a MTV Buzz bin aided Billboard pop hit in 1994 with "Feel the Pain." In true indie-rock fashion, after that hit Dinosaur ...
| | Down By Law Windwardtidesandwaywardsails CD (2003)
Drama CD Soundtrack songs
$11.59 Windwardtidesandwaywardsails is Down By Law's first collection of 100 percent new material since 1999's Fly the Flag and its first for Montreal's Union Label Group. It features the same lineup as that album, including longtime mouthpiece and guitarist Dave Smalley, bassist Keith Davies, drummer Milo Todesco, and lead guitarist Sam Williams. Written principally by Smalley and Williams, Windwardtides does include some of the band's strongest material since 1994's Punkrockacademyfightsong, even if Smalley's lyrics occasionally lurch into clichéd, preachy territory. While album opener "Next to Go" is a rather formulaic, double-time rant against society's unpredictability, things brighten considerably with "Put the Boots In," the first of the record's numerous Clash tributes. Accompanied by effective playing in the punk style (including some fiery lead guitar from Williams), Smalley leads the charge with the rallying cry "fight fight for what you want!" It's refreshing to hear a group so steeped in the punk and hardcore tradition, especially in an era when the music's ideals or supposed fashion sense are co-opted for gain opposite to what they were supposed to stand for in the first place.
But ...
