| | Steel Pulse Earth Crisis CD (1984) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Timeless CD music
$8.85 According to Steel Pulse front man David Hinds, Elektra Records informed the band--just prior to the 1984 recording of EARTH CRISIS--that they wanted the band to sound like then-popular, commercially oriented reggae artist Eddy Grant. Elektra's bid for a mainstream reggae cash-in helps explain the slick, highly polished sound of EARTH CRISIS. The breezy "Steppin' Out" and the bouncing, poppy "Tightrope" (both of which became permanent additions to the band's live repertoire) kick off the set, buttressed by bright synth lines and lush, layered vocal harmonies.
Yet Steel Pulse's particular skill has always been in giving lock-step reggae grooves singable melodies and a smooth, accessible patina. In this way, EARTH CRISIS is one of the band's most emblematic albums, a fact reflected in its great commercial success. Admirably, Steel Pulse maintains their commitment to socially and politically conscious themes here, on the environmentally concerned title track and the self-explanatory "Grab Education," among others. Though it does not match the artistic heights of other Steel Pulse releases, EARTH CRISIS is characterized by strong songs and fine musicianship, and remains one of the ...

| | Michael Buble It's Time CD (2005)
Timeless songs
$12.79 Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal genre in a distinctive manner. In addition to standards by Gershwin and Porter, Buble embraces a variety of sounds, from Motown ("How Sweet It Is") to bossa nova ("Quando, Quando, Quando" with Nelly Furtado) to the Beatles ("Can't Buy Me Love" with a "She Loves You" tag). With his smooth croon and charming persona, Buble is a natural performer, and, for fans of fearlessly romantic and infectiously swinging music, IT'S TIME is a sure bet.
Although it took more than a year of concerts and promotional appearances, Michael Bublé's 2003 debut disc of swinging pop standards finally ascended the Billboard album chart and landed at number 47. That peak may not seem impressive at first, but in a musical world dominated by rap or the latest flavor of alternative rock, Bublé's upper chart appearance was a real accomplishment and it sparked ...

| | Jaojoby Malagasy CD (2004) Import
Timeless album
$15.89 America is finally catching up with Jaojoby, it seems. The foremost practitioners of the Malagasy style known as salegy, with its distinctive 6/8 tempo and danceable melodies, have shown wonderful chops under their singer-leader, but none of their excellent studio albums stand as real preparation for this live set. It's fierce, a straight-out attack from the speakers that never lags. After working so long together they function like a machine, with the bassist leading everything, while the voices ride the wave, and everything else emerges in small, stunning clusters, like the wild lead guitar that emerges like a war whoop periodically, fighting against the accordion, or the short horn interjections. Given that their live shows last for up to five hours, you have to wonder how they can keep the pace going, since it's exhausting enough to simply listen to this record. But there are plenty of joys, like the way they can lock into a rhythm and keep it going -- not unlike James Brown and his bands, really -- until it takes on an almost hypnotic effect. Being Malagasy, the music is comprised of several layers of influences, from the varying musics of the Pacific to the guitar sounds of East ...
