From 1982 to 1986, Celluloid Records released about 40 extended-play 12"s of then cutting-edge hip-hop, characterized primarily by Linn Drums, the Yamaha DMX keyboard, turntable cutting, and rudimentary rapping. The New York-based label was overseen by Bill Laswell, who was an underground kingpin at the time, co-writing Herbie Hancock's "Rockit," co-producing Mick Jagger's solo debut, and fronting Material, among myriad other activities. Celluloid was quite forward-looking for its time. Ironically, the output of the label is quite dated today. Those Linn Drum sounds, above all, date the music instantly. Drum machines were hip and fresh at the time, sure, but they've come a long way since the mid-'80s -- as has the art of rapping, and hip-hop production in general. So perhaps what's most interesting about The Celluloid Years is how primitive the music sounds today. Laswell and company obviously were onto something big at the time, treating hip-hop as an artistically valid style of music rather than just a fad. This mindset resulted in some fascinating songs, most notably "World Destruction" (by Time Zone, featuring Afrika Bambaataa and John Lydon), "Home of Hip Hop" (D.ST), and "Crazy Cuts" (also by D.ST). Unfortunately, precious few of the songs compiled on this two-CD collection are all that fascinating. They all have their moments, featuring interesting elements here and there. But by and large, they're trying listens, whether because the rhythms are canned, the rapping is pathetic, the songwriting is weak, or some combination of these unfortunate factors. If you can discount all this, however, The Celluloid Years is a fun and historically interesting listen. It's probably not a collection you'll revisit more than once or twice, but it's revelatory upon first listen, to imagine these songs being spun by mid-'80s DJs in the clubs of New York City, accompanied, of course, by breakdancing. Also, it's good to have this music compiled once again on CD, especially in such a thorough manner (leave it to the Germans, as usual). It was previously compiled on Roots of Rap: The 12 Inch Singles, Vol. 1, though not nearly to the extent that it is here. On The Celluloid Years, Collision features the original 12" versions, which are preferable, even if the songs drag on and on to disco length. The mastering is also commendable. Old-school hip-hop historians and collectors will cherish this release, no doubt, though most everyone else will find it unbearably dated. ~ Jason Birchmeier

*** Jason Yudoff & his new album “TRAGIC HERO” have been nominated on the Official 2008 GRAMMY BALLOT in 4 CATEGORIES - including Best New Artist & Album Of The Year!! ***Jason Yudoff & The New Hotness BIOGRAPHYExpertly straddling the fine line between the underground and the mainstream, Jason Yudoff & The New Hotness is the rare combination of a marketable band with catchy hooks and commercially accesible 'singles' that also has a genre-defying jamband mentality and a high-energy live feel. Their wide range of influences include Led Zepplin, the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, P-Funk, Otis Redding, Stevie Ray Vaughn, King's X, Rush, Billy Joel, Jamiroquoi, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Extreme, Chick Corea, Rage Against The Machine, Herbie Hancock, 60's soul, 70's funk, and 80's hard rock. Named "Unsigned Artist of the Month" in Keyboard Magazine and placed on the Official 2005 Grammy Ballot in 8 different categories for his solo debut album "Smoke Sex Water", NYC-born singer/songwriter Jason Yudoff's percussive keyboard skills lead this hypnotic group down an original path of funk, rock, pop and soul with a hip, energetic and passionate vibe. There just isn't anyone out there with this kind of sound!!Always playing out in the New York City area, check www.jasonyudoff.com for tour information - MUST SEE LIVE!!REVIEWS for Jason's studio debut album SMOKE SEX WATER:"Rock 'n' roll piano is very much alive in the capable hands of New York's jason Yudoff. And we're not just talking technique, here: Jason's SMOKE SEX WATER embodies the spirit of rock, in word and - judging by the album art - deed. From the Grand Funk-ish opening cuts to the Journey-esque love songs, Jason shows a remarkably consistent concept of songwriting, singing, performance, and 'tude. Holding forth mostly on piano, he also spends significant time burning on B-3 and Clav. A very tight rythym section complements jason's blend of arrangement precision and satisfying looseness of groove. A couple of Elton John-style ballads rounds out the set. But the emphasis is squarely on party music of the highest order. Straight from the heart...ask any songwriterand you will get the same answer, that songs written straight from the heart are the easiest and best songs to compose. I have written these songs with a purpose. Many years ago whilst in the Merchant navy, I was often asked to write love letters for my crew mates to send home to their loved ones. I never realised at the time that this would lead to me writing love songs of my own.Everyone, at some time or other goes through a love crisis and I`m no different, maybe more so than others, and "A heartbeat away" sums up a poingnant phase in my life when I lost the love of my life, later to regain that love. The words "I should have said I loved you" encapsulates that for me, and maybe you. I like to think that these songs tell of a life of ups and downs but I would hope that for someone lost for words at a critical moment will find the right words to say from these ...
