| | Yolanda Adams Day By Day CD (2005)
Message CD music
$6.25 With its heavy R&B leanings, DAY BY DAY is easily one of gospel singer Yolanda Adams's most accessible and energetic records. However, this doesn't mean that her messages of praise get lost in the potent pop-tinged production; in fact, Adams is as passionate as ever about her faith, as revealed on the formidable opening track, "Victory," which immediately shines a spotlight on her powerful vocals. Renowned producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis contribute to a trio of ...

| | Anne Murray What A Wonderful World CDs (1999)
Message songs
$17.15 WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD was originally released as a two-CD set of spirituals and inspirational pop songs in 1999. The 2008 edition cuts the selection from 26 to 14 songs, eliminating most of the classic gospel hymns and focusing primarily on Anne Murray's sweet-toned easy-listening versions of stalwart pop tunes like the Beatles' "Let It Be," Jackie DeShannon's "Put A Little Love In Your Heart," and Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water." The elimination of most of the straight gospel material (cut down to ...

| | David Phelps CD (2001)
Message CD music
$10.89 As part of the Gaither Vocal Band, David Phelps is used to exercising his vocal chops. With his debut solo release, Phelps offers a disc that's rich in musical texture while singing up a virtual storm. The disc's opening grabber, "I Cry, You Care," is a testament to the steadfast love Christ bestows upon his people. Phelps sings in the upper registers on the cut as a moving bassline and drumbeat culminate to a fast fury. Much like Dallas Holms' "Rise Again" or Larry Normans' "I Wish We'd All Been Ready," the song "The End of the Beginning" has the mark of a career signature for Phelps. The tune is one that musters up feelings of inspired awe. In storybook fashion, the lyrics weave a tale of a chance meeting with a stranger on a plane. When Phelps reaches the tune's chorus his vocals are so charged that they are awe-inspiring. A nice detour from the adult contemporary fare is the all-out rocker "Let the Glory Come Down." Mixed amongst a flurry of guitar, horn, and organ chops, Phelps takes the reins like he's ...

| | Glen Gray & His Casa Loma Orchestra: Live At Meadowbrook Ballroom, Cedar Grove, NJ 1940 CD (2000) (Import) United Kingdom
Message songs
$15.65 Here's two better than average quality home recordings of the Casa Loma Band taken from the Meadowbrook Ballroom in Cedar Grove, NJ, from two weekend shows in March of 1940. Glenn never had any big-name players in his outfit (unless you count guys like Pee Wee Hunt and Murray McEachern in the trombone section), but the band played with a precision and swing that was mesmerizing. It was also a self-contained band, in the sense that there were no add-on boy or girl singers, the vocalizing being handled by reedman Kenny Sargent or trombonist Hunt. The reed section of the Casa Loma Orchestra was its true secret weapon, with the players doubling, tripling, and quadrupling on clarinet, flute, oboe, bassoon, alto, tenor, soprano, baritone, and bass saxophones. Chart wise, the band moves effortlessly on these broadcasts, from its theme of "Smoke Rings" to swingers like "Tuxedo Junction," "Honeysuckle Rose," and "How High the Moon" to novelties like "Wham!" to heavyweight material like "Prelude in C Sharp Minor." A well-rounded band that was one of the true innovators of the big-band era, the Casa Loma Orchestra is one of the hidden treasures from this era just waiting to be discovered. Well worth investigating. ~ Cub Koda
2 half hour broadcasts from a well-rehearsed Casa Loma Orchestra, capable of playing sweet & swing with equal ease, featuring light falsetto vocals by Kenny Sargent with Pee Wee Hunt adding to the fun ...

| | Jimmy Martin Singing All Day And Dinner On The Ground CD (2005)
Message music CDs
$7.15 Jimmy Martin may have helped keep bluegrass music on the country charts in the '60s with his secular, mainstream approach to music-making, but he had a spiritual side, too. He recorded two bluegrass-gospel albums for Decca Records, This World Is Not My Home and Singing All Day and Dinner on the Ground, both of which Music Mill reissued in 2005. The latter album was originally released on LP in 1970 with a dozen recordings of mixed chronology. Most of the cuts come from a 1970 session with a band that includes Doyle Lawson and Alan Munde backing Martin on a mixture of original and classic gospel songs. The remaining five recordings date from 1960-1962, two of which feature a young J.D. Crowe on banjo. The album begins with the celebratory title track, ends with the tragic "Little Angels in Heaven," and runs the gamut in between. Martin's original "God Is Always the Same" echoes the melody of "Tramp on the Street," and "Stormy Waters" is simply a gospel classic. Despite the range in recording dates, the tracks blend together well, although the cuts from 1970 have a softer edge. Singing All Day and Dinner on the Ground isn't a masterpiece on par with This World Is Not My Home, but it is ...
