Son De La Frontera CD music
$10.09 LO QUE TE CONTE MIENTRAS TE HACIAS LA DORMIDA was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album.
Although at first listen La Oreja de Van Gogh's third release might sound like a slick rehashing of the same pop formula that had brought the group consistent commercial success, Lo Que Te Conté Mientras Te Hacías la Dormida (What I Told You While You Pretended to Be Asleep) merits closer attention. Beyond some similarities to their earlier work -- nostalgic lyrics, ridiculously catchy choruses, and lead singer Amaia Montero's seemingly fragile delivery -- this album displays far greater emotional and musical range than do their earlier efforts. Montero and keyboard player Xabi San Martín continue to write most of the music, and guitar player Pablo Benegas most of the lyrics, but there are some notable exceptions, like album opener and first single "Puedes Contar Conmigo" (You Can Count on Me), written entirely by Montero. Here she abandons any former posturing as a helpless little girl ...
| | Red Nativity One Holy Night CD (1997)
Son De La Frontera music CDs
$14.65 Combining the talents of Robby Bee and Paul LaRoche (aka Brulé), this recording at its best impresses with its amalgamation of new age and Native American elements. The CD is a musical journey beginning with Creation and ending with the second coming of Jesus. This brings such seemingly disparate musical ideas as "O Come All Ye Faithful" and Native American chanting within the same song, and much of the time, the concept works very effectively. Often the music is very pretty, such as the keyboard-based opening cut "The Miracle of Life." "A Midnight Clear" is eerie and convincing in its depiction through percussive sounds of the time between Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. The only musical misstep may be "Wakan Tanka's Prayer," which runs dangerously close to sounding like new age disco in the beginning, giving a gloss to a recording that is capable of moving beyond pop or new age clichés. "Silent Grace" is the most effective cut at incorporating the western and Native traditions, as it moves from Western style music into flutes until it ends with a moving rendition of "Amazing Grace" sung in a native tongue. In this gentle yet powerful cut that honors both traditions, Red Nativity begins moving beyond mere combination of styles into something original. ~ Michael Ofjord

| | Van Davis Have You Seen This Band? CD (2006)
Son De La Frontera songs
$13.15 VAN DAVIS is a high-energy trio from New York City with a sound that straddles the worlds of rock, funk, and jazz. Their infectious melodies and deep, distinctive grooves give a nod to progressive rock, jazz fusion, metal, classical, and bluegrass, producing a hybrid that is both complex and fun. The band is known for their adventurous improvisation within intricate, well-composed songs. Guitarist Jake Ezra explains, "We're always throwing curve balls at each other and having musical dialogues. I never view our songs as totally finished. I always encourage the band to take chances and try something new."The story of Van Davis began in 2002 with Jake Ezra's desire to start an innovative instrumental band with the rock bravado of Van Halen and the free musical experimentation of Miles Davis (hence the moniker Van Davis). Immediately onboard was drummer Patrick Carmichael, who wowed Jake with his relaxed precision and funky, fun compositions. Bassist Jon Price rounded out the trio, bringing his in-depth understanding of groove and improvisation to the project. The band's 2003 self-titled debut CD was hailed as "a funky, very live-feeling CD that runs the gamut of whatever the guitar can do" (Mike Brady, proGGnosis). Van Davis' passionate following has packed renowned NYC venues including the Knitting Factory, 55 Bar, Arlene’s Grocery, and CBGB. While onstage, the band members share their humor and spontaneity as well as the technical proficiency their fans have come to expect: "Ezra's collection of pedals and effects is used to add stunning color to the music, and his manipulation of the wah pedal is perfect. The rhythm section moves from jazz to blues grooves effortlessly, and touches ...
