Personnel: Ahmad Jamal (piano), James Cammack (bass), David Bowler (drums). Recorded at Universal Studios, Chicago, Illinois. All songs written by Ahmad Jamal except "Mellowdrama" (Jimmy Heath). Personnel: Ahmad Jamal (piano); Ahmad Jamal; David Bowler (drums). Audio Mixer: Bob Bennett. Liner Note Author: Ahmad Jamal. Recording information: Universal Studios, Chicago, IL. On Pittsburgh, an ambitious tribute to his late mother and his hometown, Ahmad Jamal enlists the help of Chicago-based arranger Richard Evans -- a more familiar presence in soul-jazz's '60s heyday than in 1989, alas -- to decorate five of his compositions and Jimmy Heath's "Mellowdrama," while soloing alone on two others. While Jamal can summon forth all of the bravura resources of his piano technique on pieces like "Foolish Ways" and "Divertimento," he often chooses economy instead, relying on the trademark ostinatos of his rhythm section (James Cammack on bass; David Bowler on drums) for momentum. Evans' orchestrations, always elegant and lean, fit like gloves onto Jamal's compositions, enhancing rather than intruding, often following the contours of the melodic lines. This CD has captured both the character and the shaping hand of Jamal and the distinct sound of Evans, and they are a perfect match in this at-times-exquisite piece of work. ~ Richard S. Audio Remasterers: John Weston; Michael Fossenkemper. Liner Note Author: Bob Moses. Recording information: Apostolie Studios, New York, NY (1967-1968). Photographer: Phil Stiles. The songs on Love Animal were recorded in 1967 and 1968 at New York's Apostolic Studios, the same time and place that the Velvet Underground and the Mothers of Invention were creating groundbreaking works. These eight songs (intended to be the 19-year-old drummer's debut as a leader, but unreleased when a satisfactory deal couldn't be found) aren't up to that level of inspiration, but they're still wildly exciting and forward-looking jazz from the period where free jazz ...
| | Laura Martier Intersection CD (2003)
Pittsburgh
$18.99 "The drive and emotional commitment of this album recall the original Return to Forvever with Brazilian vocalist Flora Purim. Martier shares a high-flying expressiveness with Purim, while Toomey pushes the rhythm section aggressively." Review by Owen Cordle Raleigh News & Observer 1/20/02"Intersection" is Laura's follow-up to her much praised and played debut CD from 1997. That album, a collaboration between Laura and a quartet led by Norfolk, Virginia based guitarist Woody Beckner, found Laura working her way through a smartly chosen program of jazz standards along with a few surprises such as Alec Wilder's "Moon & Sand". For the vocalist, who makes her home on North Carolina's sandy Outer Banks, the album proved to be an ideal calling card, earning her new fans and the opportunity to perform regularly throughout the Outer Banks and Southeastern and Central Virginia. Growing up in a musical household in rural Wisconsin, she's performed everything from funk to folk over the years. It was precisely this varied musical background that made Laura such a natural for "Intersection". Drawing from a rich tapestry of musical influences, she effortlessly blends them into the straight-ahead jazz setting of these sessions, carefully maintaining the integrity of the lyrics, yet redefining the songs as the best jazz singers always do.Other info for cover.Produced by Jimmy Masters & Jack FriedenArrangements by John ToomeyAlbum Concept by Jack FriedenRecorded at Master Sound Studio, Virginia Beach, VirginiaSeptember 2000 & May 2001Engineer: Rob Ulsh Mixed by: Rob Ulsh and Jimmy Masters.Art Direction and Design by Kellie KultonPhotography by Kellie Kulton
