Informed by the breakup -- both professional and personal -- of Bob Wratten and Annemari Davies, the gossamer Her Handwriting is heartbreakingly delicate and forlorn; few artists bare their souls quite so beautifully as Wratten, and the 14 tracks which make up Trembling Blue Stars' debut rank among his most sublime to date, shards of melancholia made smooth with dreamy guitars and a hint of ambient atmosphere. The Cinderella-esque climb from lo-fi indie cult artist to Grammy nominee/major label darling must have been a perilous one for Smith, who makes the leap to the big time here after three well-regarded albums on small labels. He's lost none of his bite, though. The production values on XO may be slightly higher, but Smith's vision remains undiluted.
The production, centered around acoustic guitar augmented by keyboards and lush vocal harmonies, recalls pop icons like the Beach Boys (especially on the closing acapella cut), Beatles and Big Star, but this is no sunny Cali-pop album. The 5uu's recorded intermittently over the years for labels like Cuneiform Records and ReR until returning in 2000 with Regarding Purgatories. While credited to both Dave Kerman and the 5uu's, the Cuneiform CD is primarily a solo vehicle for composer and multi-instrumentalist Kerman, who wrote all the music and performs much of it on overdubbed guitars, keyboards, drums, bass, vocals, and noisy effects. Regarding Purgatories is an intriguing CD that should appeal to many fans of the European RIO groups and their spinoffs, particularly the Art Bears, a post-Henry Cow trio featuring guitarist Fred Frith, drummer Chris Cutler, and vocalist Dagmar Krause. The recording has a dark and Gothic mood similar to the Art Bears and early King Crimson. Kerman favors dense constructions with layers of distorted guitars and keyboards driven by martial drumbeats and unconventional percussion. How much is too much of a good thing? Depends where you stand on the thing to begin with. Such is the case with Stereolab. Detractors who were never moved by the group's sound to begin with will lament the fact that little new ground is broken on SOUND-DUST, especially after hints at new directions were dropped on 1999's COBRA PHASES album.
