Personnel: George Benson (vocals, guitar); Kashif (various instruments); Kenny G (saxophone); Perston Glass (keyboards, synthesizer, strings); Robbie Buchanan (keyboards, synthesizers); Greg Phillinganes, Cory Lerios, Walter Afanaseiff (keyboards); Frank Martin, Sterling (synthesizer); David Jenkins (guitar, background vocals); Chris Camozzi, Paul Pesco, Corrado Rustici, Paul Jackson, Jr., Alan Glass (guitar); Randy Jackson, Marcus Miller (bass); Yogi Horton, Narada Michael Walden, John Robinson (drums); Paulinho Da Costa, Gigi Conaway (percussion); Audrey Wheeler, Cindy Mizelle, Carolyn Hedrich, Bud Cockrell, Ms. Kitty Beethoven, Jennifer Hall, Suzanne Valentine, Claytoven Richardson, James Gilstrap, John Lehman, Marlena Jeter, Janey Clewer (background vocals). Producers: Tommy LiPuma, Robbie Buchanan, Kashif, Narada M. Walden. The transformation of George Benson, guitar icon, into George Benson, pop singer, is completed here, on While the City Sleeps, for there are no instrumentals at all on this hard-sell, synth-laden series of ballads and dance tunes. This is marginally better than 20/20, for at least Michael Walden's high-tech production (with added tracks by Kashif and Tommy LiPuma) has more punch, and the material, though still mostly lame, is easier to take. There is very little guitar to be heard, and what little there is can usually be found hidden behind Benson's scatting or the pulsating electronics. The best bet for ferreting out some strong guitar is on "Love Is Here Tonight," but it's deep within the mix. For those who care, an animated Kenny G turns up on "Did You Hear Thunder." ~ Richard S. Ginell Decent, more jazz-oriented '86 album Benson made with Warner Bros. under the provisions of a new pact that would give him more creative freedom. Although still not as expansive and loose as he wanted it, Benson got more room to play and present his guitar in contexts other than accompanying wordless vocals. ~ Ron Wynn George Benson steps completely into the pop singer spotlight on this 1986 recording; there are no instrumentals here. WHILE THE CITY SLEEPS is made up of ballads, such as the popular "Kisses in the Moonlight," the poppy title track, and dance tunes such as "Shiver," which is one of the album's better rhythmic pieces. Although Benson is still lead guitarist here, his well-known fretwork definitely takes a back seat to his vocals; his playing can best be heard on "Love Is Here Tonight." As usual, Benson gathers several well-known quality musicians to accompany him on this vocal venture. Unfortunately, the lack of a true percussion section is keenly felt--the machine-programmed drums and rhythmic backbeats are no substitute. WHILE THE CITY SLEEPS is, however, well produced and arranged by Narada Michael Walden, with additional production by Benson's long-time producer, Tommy LiPuma, and others. This pop album flows well, delivering some catchy, beat-driven music. While The City Sleeps Music George Benson While The City Sleeps Songs While The City Sleeps Music While The City Sleeps Review

While The City Sleeps
$7.59 Personnel: Todd Rundgren (vocals, guitar); Roger Powell (keyboards, synthesizer); John Siegler (bass); John Wilcox (drums, percussion). Todd Rundgren considered 1966 the beginning of his professional musical career, largely because the Nazz formed around that time. As a celebration, he recorded Faithful. Presumably, Faithful celebrates the past and the future by juxtaposing a side of original pop material with a side of covers. Actually, "covers" isn't accurate -- the six oldies that comprise ...
| | Isley Brothers Baby Makin' Music CD (2006)
While The City Sleeps
$10.89 The Isley Brothers: Ronald Isley (vocals); Ernie Isley (guitar, background vocals). Additional personnel: Jermaine Dupri, R. Kelly. The follow-up to the Isley's excellent 2003 album BODY KISS gives all indications that the legendary R&B outfit is still going strong some 50 years into its career. Decades before young, hip-hop-influenced urban contemporary singers were swinging and swaying their way into women's good graces, Ronald Isley was laying down the blueprint as the original mac crooner, and BABY MAKIN' MUSIC proves he's still got it. Ronald's vocal delivery is as strong as ever: rich, emotional, and dripping with seduction. A passing familiarity ...

While The City Sleeps
$9.61 Morgan & Phelan began performing together in 1976. During their 20 years together they toured from Boston to Brisbane for audiences of all ages. They have 4 recordings of original music and a cassette of American songs and stories for children. Review of Celebrations of Love"Have you ever tried to talk about love? Do you ever seek words to describe being in love and the ways its many facets intertwine? Then you'll appreciate what Peggy Morgan and Bette Phelan have accomplished in their latest recording, "Celebrations of Love." They weave beautiful lyrics and flowing melodies into a tapestry whose subject is love, in all its forms."We think of these songs as paintings of emotions," say the liner notes, "or even as snapshots of the feelings we share as we get to know one another." Nylon and steel string guitars provide the backdrops, while cello arrangements by Kay Aldrich and piano arrangements by Steven Burkle enhance the palette. The album opens with a showcase for the pair's harmonies and instrumental interplay. "You Are the One I Love/Floating on Air" celebrates the finding of a soul mate: "You are the one I love. You are my breath, you are my blood. I love you. All you are, all you do." The dance of two hearts segues into an instrumental dance, reminiscent of a gigue."If I Could Call" says more about the connection between two true lovers by touching the reality of being apart, of love across the miles. The song asks "Can you hear me call to you across a starlit sky?/ I tell myself you hear me and it helps the night go by."Love over the long haul is the theme on "Anniversary Song," a musical version of what life vows really should be. The singers recognize that the love they have chosen is not an easy path. In spite of it all, they sing, "I would love to have you here for the rest of my life."The exploration would not be complete without stories of saying goodbye, of recognizing when old dreams have worn past their time. So the melancholy flavors of "Mendocino Dawn" and "Nothing to Do But Say Goodbye" balance out upbeat tunes such as "Darlin'", "Some Kind of Magic" and "If We Can Feel Our Love."Finally, Morgan & Phelan remind us the love between ...
