Recording information: Olympic Sound Studios, London, England (05/26/1969-05/30/1969). Arranger: Richard Perry. Ella Fitzgerald's first flirtation with the acid rock era was a 1968 live date with Tommy Flanagan, titled Sunshine of Your Love, but it featured only a pair of songs from rock composers, Cream's title song and the Beatles' "Hey Jude." (Granted, they were the first two songs on the LP.) One year later, Verve booked studio time at Olympic Studios in London for her to work with producer Richard Perry, a former associate of the Leiber & Stoller crew at the Red Bird label and fresh off a remake of Fats Domino's image (for Fats Is Back). The results here are roughly similar to what he did with Fats; Perry chose songs that were most easily rendered by his artist and most capable of crossing over. Ella submerges herself nearly entirely in the work of rock or R&B stalwarts -- Smokey Robinson, the Beatles, Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson -- and Perry obliges with arrangements anchored by horns, acoustic or electric pianos, and only occasionally, strings. Despite the comfortable backings, it's never able to escape the feel of a crossover; on her version of Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' "Ooo Baby Baby," Ella makes some wonderful decisions during the verses (it's easy to see traditional pop's influence on Smokey himself), but, on the choruses, she's chained to her backing chorus with poor results. ~ John Bush Ella Fitzgerald Ella Songs Ella Review

Ella
$27.59 Japanese DSD digitally remastered re-release.
Personnel: Carole King (vocals, keyboards); James Taylor (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Danny Kootch (guitar); William Green, William Collete, Ernie Watts, Plas Johnson, Mike Altschul (flute, woodwinds, saxophone); Curtis Amy (flute, tenor saxophone); Oscar Brashear (flugelhorn); Ralph Schuckett (keyboards); Charles Larkey (bass); Joel O'Brien, Russ Kunkel (drums); Abigale Harness, Merry Clayton (background vocals). This is a 12-track collection from pop songwriting icon Carole King. This Japanese edition reissue is digitally remastered. After years as one of the most prolific and successful songwriters in pop music, Carole King emerged in the '70s with Tapestry, an album that catapulted her to the forefront of the singer/songwriter movement. While she had mined her back catalog for that album, she relied more heavily on songs written with new collaborator Toni Stern for Music. Coming out on the heels of the classic Tapestry, it's hard not to feel like this album was a bit of a letdown. However, time has shown this album to be one of her finest. While these songs lyrically lack the simplistic beauty of Gerry Goffin-penned tunes, the melodies are very strong and Carole King adds some nice texture to her piano-based tunes with the tasteful percussion of Bobbye Hall. When King goes for grand statements, however, it doesn't always work. Her call for peace and brotherhood works on songs like the opening track, "Brother, Brother," but her voice is not strong enough and does not convey enough emotion to prevent uplifting tunes like "Carry Your Load" from sounding a bit hollow and preachy. But her songwriting is still in peak form, and there are many highlights including "It's Gonna Take Some Time" (also made into a hit by the Carpenters) and "Song of Long Ago" (with backing vocals by James Taylor). ~ Vik Iyengar In an era where it's not uncommon for a superstar act to wait three or four years between release

Ella
$9.65 Personnel: John Patitucci (acoustic, electric & 6-string basses, percussion, kalimba); Chris Potter (soprano & tenor saxophones); Mark Turner (tenor saxophone); John Beasley, Danilo Perez (piano); Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez (drums, percussion); Jack DeJohnette (drums); Giovanni Hidalgo (congas, percussion); Sachi Patitucci (kalimba). Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York in August 1999. Includes liner notes by Tom Patitucci. Personnel: John Patitucci (kalimba, percussion); Chris Potter (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Mark Turner (tenor saxophone); Danilo Perez, John Beasley (piano); Horacio "El Negro" Hernández (snare drum, percussion); Jack DeJohnette (snare drum); Giovanni Hidalgo (congas, percussion); Sachi Patitucci (kalimba). Audio Mixer: Joe Barbaria. Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, NY (08/1999). Director: Alexis Davis. Photographers: John Russell ; Mary Javorek. Arrangers: Giovanni Hidalgo; John Patitucci. When GRP dropped John Patitucci in 1996, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The bassist found a supportive new home in Concord Jazz, where his creativity was encouraged and he was able to take his share of chances. Just as 1998's cerebral Now was a departure from 1996's introspective, deeply personal One More Angel, Imprint finds Patitucci surprising his followers once again by emphasizing Latin elements. Employing drummer Jack DeJohnette and saxman Chris Potter, as well as Latino improvisers, pianist Danilo Perez and drummer/percussionist Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez, Imprint is the most Latin-minded album that he recorded in the 1990s. However, Imprint isn't Latin jazz in the sense that Poncho Sanchez is Latin jazz -- it is more intellectual and less direct, and it's not as accessible. While Sanchez's ...
| | Uri Caine Sidewalks Of New York: Tin Pan Alley CD (1999) (Import)
Ella
$18.09 Personnel includes: Uri Caine (vocals, piano); Dominic Cortese (vocals, accordion); Ralph Alessi, Dave Douglas (trumpet); Josh Roseman (trombone); Bob Stewart (tuba); Bob DeBellis (flute); Don Byron (clarinet); Eddy Davis (banjo); Mark Feldman (violin); James Genus (bass); Ben Perowsky (drums). Pianist Uri Caine's work is always intriguing but this CD is something very different. This unusual release comes off like the soundtrack to an as yet unmade documentary about Tin Pan Alley at the turn of the century, complete with sound effects of horses and people on the street, folks celebrating in a rowdy saloon, and so on. "The Sidewalks Of New York" serves as a recurring theme, first as a dreamy solo by Caine, later with Ralph Alessi's distant trumpet, and finally in a bar with a determined singer. Other familiar pieces include Eubie Blake's still challenging "Charleston Rag," a low fidelity "Memphis Blues" that's made to sound as if it's being played on an ancient Victrola, and the timeless "Take Me Out To The Ball Game." There are some hilarious long forgotten pieces like "Has Anybody Here Seen Kelly?" and Irving Berlin's whimsical "Cohen Owes Me Ninety Seven Dollars; " as well as revivals of once popular but now long forgotten tunes like the tear jerking "After The Ball" and the draggy narrative "Nobody." The talented supporting cast includes clarinetist Don Byron, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and violinist Mark Feldman, among a large cast. As a concept package complete with period photographs it is very successful, but ...

Ella
$13.95 U.K.'s Leading All-Female Folk Group
The Poozies: Kate Rusby (vocals, guitar, fiddle); Patsy Seddon (vocals, harp, fiddle); Mary MacMaster (vocals, harp); Karen Tweed (vocals, accordion). Recorded at Temple Records Studio, Midlothian, Scotland. This turns out to be the only album this particular lineup of the Poozies made, and that's a shame, since it's such a good record, as well as being the most adventurous. Both "Neptune" and "Ma Plaid" echo work done by another folk artist, Eliza Carthy, in their arrangements and overall feel, while "Maja's Brudvals" travels to Sweden -- not a big step since accordionist Tweed also plays with Swap. While the heartbeat largely remains Scottish, with one foot very firmly planted in traditional music, they do look further outside. Yorkshire lass Rusby brings a vocal assurance to the proceedings that had been missing on earlier albums, and a focal point around which to build songs, while still making her contributions felt in the instrumental sets. This is where the Poozies really seem to blossom and become a real band, as opposed to an aggregation of talents playing together. Anyone who can do equal justice to a tune by the wonderful Jo Freya and arrange a Robert Burns song ("The Shepherd's Wife"), ...
