Dave Brubeck Quartet: Dave Brubeck (piano); Gerry Mulligan (baritone saxophone); Jack Six (bass); Alan Dawson (drums). Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island in July 3, 1971. Includes liner notes by George Wein. Personnel: Dave Brubeck (piano); Gerry Mulligan (baritone saxophone); Jack Six (bass instrument); Alan Dawson (drums). The Dave Brubeck-Gerry Mulligan quartet is heard in a very inspired performance at the Newport Jazz Festival, just a short time before a riot by the audience closed the festival. These versions of "Take Five" and "Open the Gates" are memorable, but it is the extended "Blues for Newport" that is truly classic. Mulligan and Brubeck (backed by bassist Jack Six and drummer Alan Dawson) constantly challenge each other during this exciting performance, making this set well-worth searching for. ~ Scott Yanow Dave Brubeck Featuring Gerry Mulligan Music Dave Brubeck Featuring Gerry Mulligan Songs Dave Brubeck Featuring Gerry Mulligan Review

Audio Mixer: Greg Droman. Recording information: House Of Gain, Nashville, TN; Javelina Studios, Nashville, TN. Photographer: E.J. Camp. Gary Allan's sophomore effort shows considerable growth since the release of his 1996 debut project, Used Heart for Sale, which seemingly filed away Allan's sharp honky tonk edge. This time out, some of the material reflects the soft pop fluff manufactured and sold as country music by Factory Music City, which don't necessarily show Allan in the best light. There are also moments when Allan sounds too much like fellow honky tonker Mark Chesnutt for his own good. Chalk this up to the Nashville production style. Allan's musical vision has always been firmly rooted in the work of George Jones, Buck Owens, Ernest Tubb, and Merle Haggard. These influences ...
