(2 Customer Reviews)
Tongue-in-cheek Detroit rockers Electric Six display a variety on influences on their witty second album, SENOR SMOKE, which deals with subjects from sex aids to government surveillance. There are Monster Mash vocals on "Rock & Roll Evacuation," and frantic disco posturing on "Dance Epidemic," while "Dark Angel" combines the band's Detroit rock & roll roots with Goth rock overtones. For good measure, they also play a creditable cover of Queen's "Radio Gaga." Disco raises its glittery head again on "Boy and Girl" (the chorus of which is "hi, welcome to Big Burger, can I take your order?"), while "Devil Nights," their homage to Detroit's Halloween tradition, is a heady brew of Led Zeppelin, lame '70s dance music, and a pinch of Black Sabbath.

Senor Smoke album
$11.99 Led by the lusty growl of Dick Valentine, the Electric Six recreate a 1970s dancefloor for rejects of both heaven and hell to boogie down upon. On a scandalous and smart 2003 debut, the Detroit band stirs metal, Southern rock, glam, and more, into a delirious post-punk stew, with lyrics of glorious nonsense such as "fire in the disco/fire in the Taco Bell." And the absurd lines are delivered by Valentine with such Bon Scott bravado and passion that it's near-impossible to divine just how serious is Electric Six. They're a graver Darkness and a sillier Tenacious D, a magnificent enigma with a genuinely fun first record.

| | Electric Six I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me CD (2007)
Senor Smoke album
$12.95 As over the top as ever, Electric Six continues to satirically embrace the excess of sex, drugs, rock & roll -- and excess itself -- on I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me from Being the Master. Lyrics are fueled by an annoyance with present-day society (most notably: computers, fast food, television personalities, politicians, and Lenny Kravitz), but these themes are barely noticeable when paired with the throbbing dance beats and the campy Jack Black-ish mannerisms of Dick Valentine, who maintains the party atmosphere throughout. A high-concept album isn't necessarily what E6's fan base is looking to hear -- they want to have fun -- and it's nice to see that Valentine hasn't lost his acute sense of bombast. The macho swagger is still an important highlight of his shtick, and he continues to invent ludicrous catch phrases like "put a little mustard on it" and bellow them with a completely straight face over a kick drum and a noodling clarinet line. He questions whether his ...

| | Brave Captain Nothing Lasts, He Sang, Only The Earth And The Mountains CD (2001)
Senor Smoke music CDs
$13.19 Rather than release both of the Fingertip Sessions volumes in America as they were originally issued, Thirsty Ear combined selections from the two for Nothing Lives Long, keeping the cover art from the second one intact. "Raining Stones," "Big Red Control Machine," "Third Unattended Bag on the Right," and "The Tragic Story" turned up from the original EP, while the remaining eight songs came from the full album. With a fully rearranged running order for all the tracks, it makes a handy way for cost-conscious fans and newcomers alike to sample Brave Captain's wares. As such, it actually makes for a better introduction to Martin Carr's solo career than either of the two original releases, dropping some of the lesser cuts like "Starfish." From the songs that do remain (especially the earlier cuts), it's still obvious that Sice was practically born to sing them instead of his ex-Boo Radleys cohort, ...
