$10.35 Roman Polanski's THE PIANIST is based on the memoirs of the talented pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman (Adrian Brody), a Polish Jew, who miraculously survived World War II. The first half of the film transports viewers to 1939 Poland, and brings it to life clearly and believably. Szpilman is a tall, handsome, winsome man who is revered for his piano performances on public radio. He lives with his family--an intelligent, loving, and spirited bunch--in an upscale flat in central Warsaw. Bombings have begun to torment the citizens of Warsaw, and step by step, the Nazis infiltrate, the Jews are branded and set apart from their neighbors, imprisoned in a ghetto, and slowly exterminated. The story is told through Szpilman's eyes, and thus carries as much confusion and fear as disgust and torment. Polanski paints Warsaw in bleak shades of gray and black, expressing the helplessness of the Jewish people and the cruelty of the Nazis with captivating photography. In the second half of the film, which takes place in the early 1940s, Szpilman is alone, having managed to avoid the trains to the death camps. His struggle to survive, with some help from non-Jews but mostly his own will to thrive, takes place in long, silent, languid stretches ...
| | A Perfect Circle Emotive CD (2004)
Equlibrium
$11.39 For EMOTIVE, their third full-length album, A Perfect Circle offers up a covers-heavy collection that includes a number of protest songs. What's most striking about this set is the way in which the group reworks pop classics. In the hands of frontman Maynard James Keenan and company, John Lennon's "Imagine" becomes a foreboding lament, and Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" is transformed into an oddly soothing, nearly ambient song. Other standout tracks include a lullaby-like, electronics-laced take on Depeche Mode's "People Are People" and a gently melodic version of "When the Levee Breaks" (almost totally unrecognizable from Led Zeppelin's revered rendition). EMOTIVE also presents two APC originals--the frustration-venting "Passive" and the scathing "Counting Bodies ...

| | Leathercoated Minds Trip Down The Sunset Strip CD (1968)
Equlibrium
$11.79 While the Leathercoated Minds is an inarguably superb name for a rock & roll band, the sad truth is it didn't really belong to a group at all. Producer and entrepreneur Snuff Garrett wanted to put together an album designed to give clueless, would-be hipsters an idea of what a night on Hollywood's fabled Sunset Strip was like; he'd already chosen a snazzy cover photo, and needed some session cats to throw together a half-hour of music to go along with it. Garrett hired a then little-known musician named J.J. Cale to produce the album and play lead guitar, and Cale's fleet but laid-back picking is ...

$13.15 When I started thinking about a Christmas album, it became clear to me that I wanted to focus on the personal and thoughtful aspects of the season. This is what I came up with:"Wassail and Apple Pie"I have fond memories of my mother in the kitchen making incredible dinners and delectable pies. At Christmas, she would make a delicious wassail that everyone savored. My mother is Christmas."Ring Out Wild Bells"Christmas brings the end of a year. We reflect on important moments in the past. We devote ourselves to becoming better in the New Year."Angels"The quiet moments of praise that we keep in our hearts are just as profound and moving as the ones we sing."Still, Still, Still"I love winter at night. Snow brings calm and romance to the frosty months. "I Heard the Bells"The lyrics to this song have always moved me. Through hard times and struggles, there will always be the familiar sound of family and friends to comfort us. We are never really too far. This is our peace."Snow Falls Down"It ...
