All eyes focus on the Vatican, watching for the traditional puffs of white smoke that signal the election of the next Pope. This time, much more is at stake. The new pontiff may be the only person who can bring peace to a world on the brink of a nuclear nightmare. Anthony Quinn, Laurence Olivier, Oskar Werner, John Gielgud, David Janssen and Leo McKern star in this film based on the Morris L. West's bestseller. Kiril Lakota, a Russian priest, has spent years languishing in a Siberian prison camp for his religious convictions. But he unexpectedly gets a reprieve when the communist government sends him to Rome to help the Vatican prevent a nuclear war. But neither the Soviet hierarchy nor the priest himself forsee that the one-time prisoner will ultimately become the new Pope. The world's first duly elected Russian Pope tries to prevent not only an atomic war, but starvation in Red China as well. Based on Morris l. West's best-selling novel. Academy Award Nominations: Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Original Score. Anthony Asquith was originally set to direct, but due to a serious illness (from which he later died), he left just before the film went into production. Amazing Spectacle Great performances by Anthony Quinn, and lessor roles of Sir Laurence Olivier and Sir John Gielgud.
The pomp and ceremony of the death of an old, and installation of a new Pope brilliantly captured on film. Surprisingly similar to the recent change in the Vatican from John Paul II to Benedict XVI. Submitted by hawewekani (Honolulu, HI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$16.89 The title refers to the night when three men, Randy (Matt Dillon), his cousin Carl (Paul Reiser) and Detective Dehling (John Goodman), all meet Jewel Valentine (Liv Tyler) at a bar called McCool's. Actually, they don't so much meet her as fall under her spell when they first lay eyes on her. In her clinging red dress she looks like a cross between a beautiful damsel in distress and the Lady In Red looking for John Dillinger. The story begins with Randy, desperate to be rid of Jewel, hiring a sleazy hitman, played by Michael Douglas in an outré toupee. His story of how Jewel led him to ruin, filmed in a stylized flashback bathed ...

$9.85 Blake Edwards's return to the male-in-meltdown territory he explored in 10 and THAT'S LIFE stars John Ritter as unemployed writer Zach, who is not only suffering from writer's block, but his drinking is out of control, as is his obsessive womanizing, and, not surprisingly, his wife wants to end their marriage. To add to his problems, his house has just burned down, and his agent is knocking at death's door. But since this is a Blake Edwards comedy, Zach has enough charm and relative affluence to continue his pursuits, which the director regards with a bemused deatchment. One of his girlfriends sets his piano ...

$15.09 This historical melodrama, a true rarity for Alfred Hitchcock, was the last film produced by Hitchcock's own Transatlantic Pictures. Set in 1831 Australia, the film takes Hitchcock's enduring fascination with the underdog despised by the world and applies it to a social drama of class and wealth stretched across the British empire. In the past, Sam Flusky (Joseph Cotten) was an Irish stablehand brash enough to elope with the aristocratic daughter of the estate, Lady Henrietta (Ingrid Bergman). When her brother ...
