Schumann: Carnaval; Fantasiestücke; Papillons CD

 Excellent Pianism and Strong Interpretation
Marc-Andre Hamelin has enough pianistic capability for any piece that comes along. In many of the Schumann pieces this ease of note playing makes the inner line of the piece become clearer than with other players, and this increases the enjoyment greatly. I am not quite taken with his interpretation with regard to tempos, portamento, and emphasis of theme, however, and thus only 4 Stars. You will not be unhappy with this recording, but there are others who are finer interpreters of the music (IMHO) and for me this elevates them in these pieces above Hamelin. It is much like Schnabel's Beethoven Sonatas...not note perfect, but with fire and interpretation not to be missed! Well, I can easily recommend this CD to you with that quibble.
