UK only remastered re-issue of their 1978 album. Catapulted to huge international success as a result of their solitary hit single, the stunningly infectious and universally praised, 'Black Betty', Ram Jam seemed poised for a career in the rock n' roll fast lane. Disappointingly, however, it was not to be; dubbed by the media as one hit wonders unable to fulfill their potential. Behind the scenes, however, a complex web of intrigue was played out against a backdrop of record company machinations, power-playing producers, managerial hi-jinx and internal feuds. Fed up of being pushed around like puppets, the band focused their anger and frustration to record A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Ram, one of hard rocks most coveted and revered records that, for no fault of its own, failed to resuscitate their ailing career. Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Ram Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars)   MUCH heavier than the first
After liking "Black Betty" from the Ram Jam debut but finding most of the rest of that album (except 404) pretty much underpowered, who would have expected the pyrotechnic overdrive that was album #2? certainly not I when I gave up a fistful of dollars (my allowance back in those days)to "risk" and give Ram Jam one more try. Was I ever pleasantly surpised for "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Ram" is largely a nitro-guitar fuelled affair albeit in a 70s Ted Nugent sort of a way. All in all, this is a killer record with the standout cuts being "Just Like Me", "Hurricane Ride", "Gone Wild", "Pretty Poison", "Runway Runaway", "Please Please Me" and the semi-epic "Turnpike". Heavy bar brawling Nugent comes to mind on this though certainly the finer (and heavier) moments of Pat Travers, Rick Derringer, and AC/DC come to mind. Without question, this album laid to waster its' predecessor like nobody's business though the band disappeared soon after (perhaps the obvious & seemingly purposeful lack of radio-friendly singles being to blame). If you like heavy "stuff" from the 70s, this one is a DEFINITE "must have".

 Under-rated classic
It's about time that someone released this album on CD. Released in 1978, the album stands as Ram Jam's finest moment. Classic songs abound, especially the outstanding "Turnpike." No extras, but who needs them with a great album like this. If the same people who heard this album and were influenced by it, bought it originally, it would have been a million seller.

Bought the LP years ago...loved it. Hearing the songs again in CD quality - nice. Every song on this CD rocks - very crunchy and loud. Buy it and pop it in your car CD player - try not to get a speeding ticket !!!
