Here at last is a fine album from a talented Windy City group that got lost in the shuffle. With the nearly simultaneous rise of BS&T, Chicago, Lighthouse, and Chase, radio listeners often could not tell one group from another, and the Ides of March didn't get a fair shake. Besides the second single "Superman", the album also features the lovely "L.A. Goodbye," which rivaled the type of harmony popularized by CSN&Y and that Chicago featured on album tracks. Like Chicago's flair for extended suite compositions, the Ides also worked well in longer forms. This album's "Tie-dye Princess" has dated badly in its lyric content, the music still has the impact desire. The remainder of the album has forgotten (or unexplored, for many listeners) joys. I was privileged to see IoM in concert in a small university setting, less than 2,000 in attendance, in 1971 after this album was out. The band performed the bulk of their two albums flawlessly, which is really saying something, as I was a sophomore college music major with a fine ear. They even stayed around post-concert and signed autographs, talking openly and freely with those of us who cared to stay around. They deserve to have this lost gem rediscovered, and I hope it builds a new audience for them.
