Angel Of The Presence
$13.49 Dave Peck is one of those pianists who helps one understand why certain songs have been labeled "standards." They represent that core of American popular music which challenges the likes of great jazz pianists to take full advantage of the improvisational opportunities they offer. For his fifth album for his Let's Play Stella outfit, Peck, in trio format, successfully takes on the test of giving a fresh perspective to songs which have been recorded and played a countless number of times. With an agenda running from a relatively modern jazz classic, ...

Angel Of The Presence
$14.55 Chris Potter took his electric band, Underground, on the road throughout 2005, trying out new material and working through some of his gems. This Sunnyside date is the first time this band has been in the studio together. Underground features Potter playing tenor saxophone exclusively, guitarist Wayne Krantz (in a rare sideman role to be sure), Craig Taborn on Fender Rhodes, and drummer Nate Smith. Right, that's not an error: there's no bassist. The program is diverse, featuring six Potter originals and some startling choices for covers: Billy Strayhorn's "Lotus Blossom," Lennon and McCartney's "Yesterday" (which also features Adam Rogers on an additional guitar), and the Radiohead tune "Morning Bell." The obvious question is whether this a "fusion" record. The answer would have to be yes, given the knottiness of the arrangements, the twisting and turning original tunes, and the phrasing between Krantz and Taborn. But then, that's an obvious answer. The less obvious one is that ...
| | Regina Carter CD (1995)
Angel Of The Presence
$6.09 For her debut recording as a leader, post-Straight Ahead violinist Regina Carter plays marvelously, improvises well, and has a tone that is typically soaring, clear, and at times mournful. Victor Bailey's production values and songs (he wrote three) have a profound effect on the result of this music, which mostly ranges from pop-funk to smooth instrumentals. Carter wrote or co-wrote six of the ten tracks, but this is not to say it's all samey and predictable. The highlight is the Mark Helias piece "Beau Regard" in a 6/8 rhythm, where trombonist Steve Turre and Carter play wonderfully rich unison lines while pianist Rachel Z embellishes with her own gossamer-like, forward-moving runs. Exuding true, pure soul, Carter and bassist Lonnie Plaxico interpret the Billie Holiday epic "Don't Explain" with no help. It's a tour de force of restrained response and a deeply felt, imaginative interpretation. Though barely two minutes each, the two "Sticks & Stones" tracks (the "Sticks" version and the "Stones" version) join Carter and djembe player Abdulai Epizo Bangoura for a violin vamp and percussion workout. The rest of the material lies in the R&B/pop vein, and holds little interest on a jazz, smooth jazz, or commercial level. The lyrics are one-liners, the instrumental passages are not exciting or vital, and though Carter's improvisations are intriguing, they are not enough to lift tunes like "I Wanna Talk to You," "When I Hear Your Name," "Ain't Nobody," and "The Last Time..." past a vapid vanishing point. However, artistry ...
| | Richard Buckner Bloomed CD (1994)
Angel Of The Presence
$21.35 The remastered edition of BLOOMED features five previously unreleased tracks.
This is a remastered version of singer/songwriter Richard Buckner's first album, BLOOMED. The 17-song document of sweetly wrought sorrow adds five songs not included on the original release. The majority of the songs, like the gorgeous "Mud," seem to have been birthed by a near-cataclysmic split. The singer warns "Love is such a monster, kid / and power is addictive / Sweet fire and beauty'll turn this city flat / And could you really handle that." Soft rushes of tremulous mandolin and crystalline acoustic guitar paint a backwash over which the singer casts his fragile voice.
Though the album enjoys an admirable range of instrumental colorings, like the familiar, piquant strains of pedal steel on "Gauzy Dress in the Sun" and the folky organ undulations on "Six Years," Buckner's rapturously poetic lyrics and heart-on-sleeve vocal delivery steal the show. BLOOMED is simply the perfect accompaniment to heartache.
Buckner's 1994 debut is an accomplished but subdued affair with hardly a trace of rock in sight. The emphasis is on his rich but weary vocals and sober tales of romance and restlessness, with dignified Texas prairie backup by such esteemed regionals as Lloyd Maines (who produced) and Ponty Bone. Very much in the vein of Butch Hancock, but much darker at this point, without the eccentricity and boisterousness ...
