| | Henry Threadgill This Brings Us To, Vol. 1 CD (2009) Digipak
Tzitter music CDs
$12.89 Henry Threadgill has, in the framework of abstract music, been a stalwart, spontaneous composer whose personal sound is near impossible to identify, or certainly codify. A listener who enjoys very challenged music would have difficulty in discerning what is made up or written out. The elusive nature of Threadgill's kind of progressive jazz has to confound even those most oriented to his quirky pieces. Where the quintet Zooid lands in this quirky quandary of pegging a signature sound is subject to guesswork, but it definitely has its own brand of concentrated cohesion. Between Threadgill's scattershot flute and alto sax, the sleek tuba or trombone work of Jose Davila, and Liberty Ellman's thorny electric guitar, sparks are always flying about in a collective discourse that is completely unpredictable. Electric bass guitarist Stomu Takieshi and drummer Elliot Humberto Kavee are practically secondary in this mix of give-and-take improvisation that ...

| | Chris Botti In Boston CDs (2009) With DVD
Tzitter CD music
$14.99 A sequel of sorts to Chris Botti's 2006 PBS special, LIVE WITH ORCHESTRA & SPECIAL GUESTS, the September 2008 event LIVE IN BOSTON found the sartorially splendid cool jazz trumpeter accompanied by the Boston Symphony and a collection of celebrity vocalists. Also available as a DVD, the concert delivers an overview of popular music, with jazz standards like "I've Got You Under My Skin" right alongside "Ave Maria" and Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You." Whether featuring rocker Steven Tyler, AMERICAN IDOL chanteuse Katharine McPhee, or pop-opera superstar Josh Groban, all the tunes are presented in Botti's inimitable, Chet Baker-influenced uber-smooth style.
Chris Botti in Boston features trumpeter Chris Botti along with a bevy of name artists performing live with the Boston Pops Orchestra at Symphony Hall in 2008. Fully documented as a concert film and album, the night is an intimate and soulful birds-eye view of the supple-toned trumpeter who has grown into his role as a virtuoso since his time backing up Sting -- who of course appears here. Perhaps it isn't surprising then the concert is subtly reminiscent ...
| | Compostela Wadachi CD (1997)
Tzitter music CDs
$13.39 Wadachi is an album of light-hearted excellence. You'd more expect to hear it in Tzadik's Radical Jewish Culture series than the label's New Japan, but Compostela is, after all, a Japanese band led by the musician who brought chindon to jazz and rock contexts. The resulting music is a refined blend of Masada, an oom-pa marching band, and the inter-collaborating, madly versatile musicians on Montreal's Ambiances Magnetiques label (such as that heard on Jean Derome's Je Me Souviens). Compiled from recorded performances spanning 1991 through 1992, the music whirls, polkas, and hops with tightly crafted, breathing vibrancy, and can just as quickly lower the energy into beautiful measures strung together on the thread of a guitar played like an erhu on "Sign of 1," or a dirge on "Fallen Bird." Following these tracks, "Un Sterbliche Opfer" offers confounding, bright moments in which alto saxophonist Shinoda Masami delivers a strained tone and breathless phrasing that recall Albert Ayler's gospel renditions! Compostela's music is ...
| | Rahsaan Roland Kirk Blacknuss CD (1971)
Tzitter songs
$9.95 between August 31 and September 8, 1971. Originally released on Atlantic (1601).
Like his 1968 album VOLUNTEERED SLAVERY, most of BLACKNUSS consists of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's idiosyncratic interpretations of pop songs, including a soulful "Ain't So Sunshine" featuring Kirk simultaneously singing and playing the flute; bluesy versions of the Motown classics "What's Goin' On/Mercy Mercy Me," "Never Can Say Goodbye" and "My Girl"; and even a relaxed take on Bread's soft-pop hit "Make It With You." Though jazz interpretations of pop songs are often slight and shallowly commercial, Kirk's obvious fondness for the songs themselves ignites his typically emotional reedwork, passionate even when he's playing several instruments simultaneously. The pop songs are given an added gravity by the album's two stand-out tracks, a glorious take on the gospel standard "Old Rugged Cross" preceded by Kirk's fervent sermonizing, and the anthemic title track, a drawling blues jam punctuated by the vocals of Kirk and Cissy Houston and some sterling piano by Sonelius Smith.
With a deep soul groove, Kirk shines on funky renditions of Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On/Mercy Mercy Me', the traditional 'Old Rugged Cross' and Bill Withers' 'Ain't No Sunshine'. 2002 reissue originally ...
| | Icehouse Code Blue CD (1992) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Australia
Tzitter album
$16.19 CODE BLUE is a 15-track digitally remastered release by U.K. synth rockers Icehouse, including "Mercy On The Boy" and "Where The River Meets The Sea."
As David Lord was unfortunately unavailable, Code Blue was instead produced by Nick Launay (Midnight Oil, INXS, Living End), who had at the time worked with Jenny Morris and David Byrne. This and the badly timed Great Southern Land compilation may well have been the nail in the coffin. The year 1990 proved to be a difficult time for rock bands, as the dance movement ...
| | J J Cale To Tulsa And Back CD (2004)
Tzitter CD music
$12.59 On his first studio outing in eight years, the mythical Okie troubadour turns in a solid set of his trademark dusty blues tunes. What is not so typical, as with Travel Log from 1990, is that Cale steeps himself in technology and evokes the moods and frameworks of music that intersect with the blues or stand in opposition to them. The keyboards, drum loops, and horns on this record are as pervasive as the guitars. Needless to say, this requires an attitude adjustment on the part of ...
