| | Trumpet Artistry Of Stu Williamson CD - Import Stu Williamson Discography of CDs
Cherry-picking highlights from his mid-'50s dates for the Bethlehem label, The Trumpet Artistry of Stu Williamson represents a superb introduction to this underappreciated West Coast jazz great. A remarkably supple, nuanced trumpeter, Williamson captures the absolute essence of the left-coast sound. His solos are expansive yet efficient, speaking volumes in a minimum of phrases. Brother Claude plays piano on all 14 cuts, while Charlie Mariano, Jimmy Giuffre, and Bill Holman rotate guitar duties. All are in top form, crafting soulful renditions of "Yardbird Suite," "Red Cross," and "Darn That Dream." ~ Jason Ankeny
5tu Williamson was not yet 24 when these recordings were made. He had this quality as a trumpet player and as a musical person that "owed him to take his place alongside the half dozen other trumpet players who formed the core of what was the fairly permanent West Coast jazz scene. Judging from his work here, the authority in his musical voice was unmistakable. multiwves. 2006 Trumpet Artistry Of Stu Williamson Music Trumpet Artistry Of Stu Williamson Songs | 1. | The Lady Is A Tramp |

Recording information: Audiomation Studios, Las Vegas, NV (06/2001). Trombonists Carl Fontana and Allen Hermann join forces for a brilliant two-horn session in 2001, which turned out to be one of Fontana's last dates prior to his death in 2003. Although they had played together on a number of occasions, this is evidently the first time both men appeared on the same release. Fontana was an established veteran of many decades, ...

His frontline (which at the time boasted the very distinctive sounds of trombonist Trummy Young and clarinetist Edmond Hall) was always a major asset and singer Velma Middleton helps out on a funny vocal duet version of "Baby, It's Cold Outside." The typical program (which includes such songs as Satch's perennial opener "Indiana," "Basin Street Blues" and "Tiger Rag") offers few surprises, but ...
