| | Tom Schuman Deep Chill CD Tom Schuman Discography of CDs
Personnel: Tom Schuman (keyboards, programming); Peter White (guitar); Jeff Kashiwa (alto saxophone); Dave Charles (percussion). There is no doubt that Tom Schuman, best known for his longtime association with Spyro Gyra, is a talented keyboardist who could play creative and original music if he desired. There is also no doubt that the word "creative" has no place on Deep Chill, a set of derivative, unimaginative, and simply dull jazzy dance music. One can certainly imagine Ramsey Lewis performing the same commercial tracks 30 years earlier with more energy and originality. There are a few heated moments along the way with Schuman showing traces of brilliance and saxophonist Jeff Kashiwa adding a bit of soul to the music, but the throwaway R&B vocals by Angei, the obvious rhythms, and the unmemorable melodies make Deep Chill an instant cutout. Everyone involved is capable of much better. ~ Scott YanowJazzTimes (p.83) - "['Everybody Knows'] has groovy, computer-enhanced vocal inflections....Most of the album is filled with jazz, funk, R&B vocals, Latin, pop and fusion." | | Jan Garbarek Dresden: In Concert CDs (2009)
Deep Chill
$23.29 Personnel: Jan Garbarek (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone). Audio Mixers: Jan Erik Kongshaug; Jan Garbarek; Manfred Eicher. It's hard to believe that after recording as a leader for 40 years, DRESDEN: IN CONCERT is Jan Garbarek's first-ever live album. For those who think that Garbarek abandoned jazz some time ago, this will be a shock. DRESDEN is an engaged, kinetic, double-disc, two-hour performance of his quartet playing in the modern jazz idiom and using all of its tenets--from complex harmonics and rhythmic invention to extended lyric improvisation--to create a tour de force that honors all the music he holds dear. Garbarek plays tenor, soprano, and selje flute here, and is accompanied by his regular group that includes drummer Manu Katche, pianist/keyboadist Rainer Brüninghaus, and electric bassist Yuri Daniel. There are 16 compositions that include tracks from previous albums -- some of them radically but exquisitely revamped for this quartet and performance. There are also tunes by his bandmates, and an extended, stellar ...
