| | Massacre Killing Time CD Massacre Discography of CDs
Of the many obscure and wonderful albums recorded by members of the downtown avant-garde elite in the early 1980s, this is one of the most obscure and most wonderful. Massacre (despite its heavy-metallish moniker) was a challenging but quirkily charming "power trio" consisting of guitarist Fred Frith, bassist Bill Laswell and drummer Fred Maher, all of whom had already established themselves as movers and shakers in the experimental-music world. Some of the tunes, such as the charmingly offbeat "Legs" and "Aging With Dignity" were clearly composed ahead of time -- probably by Frith, given his already-established penchant for combining weird instrumental textures and unusual time signatures with cute melodies. Others, just as clearly, are group improvisations. Those who think they don't care for improvised music are advised to give "Subway Heart" and "Tourism" a try before making any judgments. Again, the credit for the consistent appeal of these performances goes largely to Frith, whose bag of sonic tricks is bottomless and who (unlike most of his peers) seems genetically incapable of making an uninteresting note choice. It's difficult to imagine anyone with a taste for unusual rock & roll not being seduced by this rough gem of an album. (Massacre reunited, though with a different drummer, in 1998 to record My Funny Valentine on the Tzadik label.) ~ Rick Anderson Massacre Killing Time Songs Killing Time Review

Killing Time
$9.79 While the most obvious flaw of Devo's Duty Now for the Future is that the material simply isn't as good as on their debut, their second album also captures the group in the midst of a significant stylistic shift. On their first album, for all their herky-jerky rhythms and electronic accents, Devo were pretty much a standard guitars/bass/drums rock band, albeit one with ...

Killing Time
$11.99 Many regard the mid-60's Davis Group as the best R&B group ever. Davis had recruited a very youthful Steven Winwood on keyboards and vocals, who was a popular favorite with their audiences. Includes the hits 'Gimme Some Lovin', 'I'm A Man', 'Keep On Running', 'Back Into My Life Again' and more.
Spencer Davis Group includes: Spencer Davis (drums); Steve Winwood (vocals, keyboards); Muff Winwood (bass). A collection of 14 tracks by acclaimed British invasion band, Spencer Davis Group, featuring such songs as "Gimme Some Lovin', "Keep on Running," and "I'm a Man." Yeah, it was the Spencer Davis Group, but it was really Steve Winwood (he was still Stevie then) who ran the show with his gritty, soulful singing and guitar and organ playing, all of which make songs like "I'm a Man," "Gimme Some Lovin'," "Keep on Running," and "Somebody Help Me" the classics that they are. This 14-track set was originally issued as a double LP by Island Records in 1967 and features all of the above songs plus other cuts from the same time period. ~ Steve Leggett Somehow the same label issued two albums with the same name in the same year. This one, with 15 tracks, is vastly preferable to its 10-song counterpart. Both releases hit the high points with the irresistible "Gimme Some Lovin'," "I'm a Man," and others. With half as many tunes, though, this album includes the minor hit "Strong Love" and "Goodbye Stevie," written by the group to commemorate the departure of sensational singer and multi-instrumentalist prodigy Steve Winwood. "Waltz for Lumumba" presages the jazzier turns he would take with Traffic. ~ Mark Allan Anyone who has suffered through Capitol Records' domestic Best of the Spencer Davis Group, and also doesn't ...

Killing Time
$26.29 The belated American release of an album first released in Europe and Asia in 2005, CHRIS STILLS is the second solo album by the Paris-based singer/songwriter. The son of 1960s rock legend Stephen Stills and French pop star Veronique Sanson, Stills splits the 12 songs on this album between California-style singer-songwriter pop and the French chanson tradition. Collaborating with some very big names in French pop, including songwriters Philippe Dijan and Stephan Eicher (who contribute two songs, "Demon" and "La Fin du Monde"), CHRIS STILLS also features a collaboration with Ryan Adams on the final track, "Pour Nous," and a quirky cover of the Band's "The Weight." The American edition features new artwork. Recorded in 2005 and subsequently released in Europe and Canada of that year, Chris Stills' sophomore album took an unexpectedly tumultuous path to its eventual appearance in the U.S. nearly three years after it was recorded. The track list was also changed for the disc's stateside bow. The follow-up to his 1998 debut successfully widens the distance between his somewhat derivative initial offering as he stakes out more unique, personal territory apart from the folk-rock of his previous set. That has been replaced with an introspective and appealing pop/soul mélange which not only distances him from his famous father Stephen, but is unique in its own right. Credit goes in part to producer Hod David (Maxwell) who assists with the instrumentation and finds a comfortable space between R&B and singer/songwriter pop. This song cycle of sorts built around finding love generally avoids the clichés inherent in that most overdone of subjects because of the quality material and Stills' sweetly innocent yet emotionally inspired vocals. A small string section brings additional warmth to "When ...
