It's been two years since Oliver Lake's last proper studio album, and this live set was recorded before that. This version of Oliver Lake's quartet included Native American flutist, poet, and vocalist Mary Redhouse, bassist Santi Debriano, and drummer Gene Lake. The music ranges from angular post-bop -- "Brass & Oak" -- to haunting Native American chants such as "Naisai," with aboriginal rhythms played by Gene, and spacious yet restrained free playing by the others. There are seriously angular workouts as well, such as "Yo' Dance" where Oliver blows and is responded to by the wood flute and Redhouse's gone vocalizing. "Montana Grass Song" is an authentic powwow song, completely reinvented by the band while respecting its traditional framework before making it a scattish/improv swing tune. The title track, from 2003's Cloth, is given a tough quartet reading as well. And it sizzles. Oliver's soloing here is particularly wonderful, but it's the rhythm section that keeps it all popping. Ultimately, this is a good date, but it's outside much of the jazz frame a lot of the time. It will appeal to Oliver Lake's hardcore fan base but it's the wrong recording to introduce to a novice. ~ Thom Jurek

Few arrangers have attempted to score John Coltrane's landmark suite A Love Supreme for good reason: it is very difficult to stand up to the emotional impact of the composer's original recording. But Wynton Marsalis ambitiously dove into scoring it for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra for this Palmetto CD. The results are rather uneven. In spite of the best efforts of the participating musicians, the solos often prove to be a distraction, leaning more toward humor than sticking to Coltrane's message. The most ridiculous section occurs in the opening movement, "Acknowledgement," when the baton is passed from one player to the next as they take turns playing the brief cadence of the well-known A Love Supreme vamp, which quickly grows tedious. Trombonist Grachan Moncur III, who was a member of the Jazztet in the early 1960s, gained his greatest fame for his two Blue Note albums (Evolution and Some Other Stuff) which were quite adventurous. He also worked with Archie Shepp, became involved in free jazz and spent much of the 1970s and '80s as a music educator. Dental problems resulted in Moncur only playing once in a great while in the 1990s. He had been in obscurity for quite awhile when he was contacted by arranger Mark Masters for the Exploration project. Fortunately Moncur's playing proved to still be in his prime. Masters wrote sympathetic charts for many of the trombonist's finest pieces, utilizing an all-star nonet that could really dig into the inside/outside music. "Excursion," a very coherent three-minute free improvisation, is a change-of-pace and precedes the closing blues "Sonny's Back," a 1962 piece originally played by the Jazztet. East met West for 1985's action-packed The Last Dragon (or Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon, depending on how you want to look at it), a vehicle for Gordy's Motown label that employed Vanity in a lead role as popular veejay Laura Charles, the object of affection for Taimak's talented martial arts hero character Leroy (or "Bruce Leroy," as he was respectfully referred to). By no means is the movie a classic, and neither is the Motown-heavy soundtrack. You'd be missing the point if you thought of them in those terms. The movie was marketed at kids, and it provides good-natured fun and action.
