Anyone who earns a second volume of GREATEST HITS has obviously learned a thing or two about staying power and consistency of artistic vision. Such is the case with Alan Jackson, who appeared in the 1990s as mainstream country's alternative to the dominance of King Garth. His sound was still eminently accessible, but the faux-Springsteen drama of Kiss fan Garth's rock manque was eschewed for a more roots-oriented (though hardly traditionalist) sound. Things kick off nicely with the Cajun-flavored smash "Little Bitty," then giving way to the introspective, fiddle-laced country ballad "Everything I Love." Tish Hinojosa has been ahead of the curve of some time. Her music is a superb amalgam of country, American and Mexican folk, Tex-Mex/conjunto, and pop, and she's a worthy contemporary of similar performers such as Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris and Peter Rowan. SIGN OF TRUTH is something of a departure from her earlier releases.
Here Hinjosa tries for a fuller "pop" sound, but it's pop in the Burt Bacharach/Brian Wilson mode, rather than in the Britney Spears sense, with more keyboards and tasteful, restrained electric guitars. The jaunty, joy-filled "Wildflowers" could be an outtake from a late '60s Beach Boys album, with a hook recalling a mellow summertime of sweet soul music. The reflective "The Dreams I Have Seen" mixes jangly tremolo guitars, and sounds like R.E.M. playing Jimmy Webb, with Hinojosa's dulcet, clear soprano gliding towards the heavens. She doesn't forsake her roots, though, as evidenced by the haunting Tex-Mex/Western-flavored ballad "Mona Lisa By the Rio Grande." SIGN demonstrates Hinojosa's growth and range, with no compromise of vision.
