(1 Customer Review)
For Steve Khan's first solo release in nearly ten years, 2006's The Green Field, the guitarist assembled quite a supporting cast. Once more, Khan has called upon his old pals John Patitucci on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums, with percussionist Manolo Badrena rounding out the cast. Despite the layoff between solo releases, it's not to say that Khan wasn't busy since his previous solo effort, 1998's You Are Here -- the guitarist toured as part of Dave Samuels' tour in support of Tjader-ized: A Cal Tjader Tribute -- appeared on Dave Valentin's Sunshower, and also re-formed the Caribbean Jazz Project. For fans waiting patiently for Khan's next solo outing, The Green Field proves that the wait was certainly worth it, as Khan's trademark fluid guitar playing is on display throughout. Instead of focusing on succinct songs, the majority of the album's nine tracks are of the extended variety, which makes the album a fine mood setter -- especially the album opening "El Viñón" and the salsa sounds of "Cosecha lo Que Has Sembrado." Also of note is the all-encompassing, nearly 20-minute long album closing title track. Steve Khan's The Green Field is highly recommended to fans of expertly played latin tinged progressive jazz. ~ Greg Prato
Personnel: Steve Khan (guitar); Manolo Badrena (vocals, percussion); John Patitucci (double bass); Jack DeJohnette (drums).
Down Beat (p.71) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Khan is resourceful, tasteful, and intelligently tactical with the pyrotechnics. This date shows that can go a long way." Steve Khan Green Field Songs Purchase Green Field CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Vital Information Come On In CD (2004)
Green Field album
$14.49 Steve Smith's Vital Information has evolved from being a fusion band into one that is closer to soul-jazz. He had led units under the Vital Information name for 21 years when he recorded Come On In, a tight quartet album featuring guitarist Frank Gambale (of Chick Corea's Elektric Band), keyboardist Tom Coster (who also plays accordion), and bassist Baron Browne. The music includes some grooves worthy of Joe Zawinul, straight-ahead sections, catchy themes, and plenty of funky rhythms that avoid ...
| | Bill Connors Return CD (2005)
Green Field CD music
$13.89 Bill Connors will always be best known for being the original guitarist with Chick Corea's Return to Forever, preceding Al DiMeola. After making one classic album (Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy), Connors left RtF and has had a lower profile ever since, spending some time exploring acoustic guitar. On 2004's Return, Connors is back on electric guitar but playing post-bop jazz rather than fusion and ...
| | Dennis Chambers Boston T Party CD (2006)
Green Field music CDs
$14.29 In the '80s, there appeared to be an onslaught of fusion releases that managed to incorporate elements of funk into the mix, while also favoring an incredibly clean production. Although the style appeared to go largely out of vogue in the '90s, several veteran players continued to stick to their guns, including drummer extraordinaire Dennis Chambers. Chambers has been releasing solo albums since the late '90s, yet he's probably best known as a hired gun, having played alongside several renowned artists of the rock world -- Santana, Steely Dan, and Parliament-Funkadelic -- as well as guitarist ...
| | Chris Potter Underground CD (2006)
Green Field songs
$13.49 Chris Potter took his electric band, Underground, on the road throughout 2005, trying out new material and working through some of his gems. This Sunnyside date is the first time this band has been in the studio together. Underground features Potter playing tenor saxophone exclusively, guitarist Wayne Krantz (in a rare sideman role to be sure), Craig Taborn on Fender Rhodes, and drummer Nate Smith. Right, that's not an error: there's no bassist. The program is diverse, featuring six Potter originals and some startling choices for covers: Billy Strayhorn's "Lotus Blossom," Lennon and ...

| | Taylor Brown What Lies CD (2006)
Green Field songs
$11.15 Taylor Brown's first solo album, 'What Lies', released this fall [2006], is bold in a million different ways. The tracks on 'What Lies' are grown-up love letters, concretely personal, with Brown unabashedly laying his life out for his listeners. This is a change for Brown. "I was looking back at songs I recorded in 2001, and none of them were about love." 'What Lies' is also a departure from his trio's double disk, 'Notebook', released in 2005. It is more refined and concise with only 8 elegant tracks, out of 14 recorded. Part of this change comes from his continuing partnership with producer Gordon Millsaps, whom Brown gave more creative control to for this newest project. "Gordon brought out the rougher side to my voice, letting it sound dirtier and heavier. Ultimately, He is responsible for how the album sounds." What Lies is also the result of collaboration with percussionist, Rigel Byrum-Ridge. "Rigel is the perfect percussionist, he's so sensitive and puts himself into the songs, and is very flexible, playing all sorts of different styles. I couldn't find a better drummer."Taylor Brown's earliest memory of his childhood in Philadelphia is making up songs on a plastic guitar when he was three. His musical ambitions were ...
