Although drummer/producer Cecil Brooks III gets top billing, this set is very much a feature for organist Gene Ludwig. While most organ records match the Hammond B-3 with guitar, drums, and sometimes tenor, Double Exposure is a set of organ-drums duets with Ludwig providing the basslines. Brooks gets his breaks but Ludwig naturally dominates the music, chugging and swinging his way through six veteran standards, a blues by Brooks, and a Stevie Wonder song. Influenced by Jimmy Smith but having his own sound in the tradition, Gene Ludwig is heard throughout in top form, creating one of his best-ever recordings. ~ Scott Yanow
Recording information: Anything Audio Multimedia, Pittsburgh, PA (07/2000).
Personnel: Cecil Brooks III (drums); Gene Ludwig (Hammond b-3 organ).
Liner Note Author: Bill Milkowski.

Double Exposure album
$14.69 Since making a middle-of-life comeback in the 1990s, saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Charles Lloyd has continually issued fascinating recordings. While some of them contain missteps, it's not for lack of ambition. For one of jazz's elder statesmen, Lloyd pushes his envelope of ideas about improvisation, rhythm and harmony, often to the breaking point. He is a player who sets sometimes impossibly high goals for himself, but in so doing, gives listeners something to really hold on to when encountering one of his albums or seeing him live. Jumping the Creek, which continues his association with ECM Records, is another compelling affair. The band -- pianist ...

| | Sonny Rollins Without A Song: The 9/11 Concert CD (2005)
Double Exposure music CDs
$9.75 Recorded on September 15th, 2001, WITHOUT A SONG is a live recording by jazz icon Sonny Rollins, observing the World Trade Center disaster that occurred just four days prior to the concert. Rollins was one of the few musicians from jazz's golden age still performing with a sense of vitality, and that is especially clear on this recording, which is imbued with the gravity appropriate to the aforementioned tragedy.
Yet the proceedings are never ...
| | Don Braden Workin' CD (2006)
Double Exposure songs
$14.79 With a wealth of tenor saxophonists among his generation, Don Braden might get lost in a crowd when compared to those who have signed to major labels or have expensive publicity firms. But Braden has been a model of consistency as a leader over his career, including this 2005 performance recorded at Cecil's, featuring his trio with organist Kyle Koehler and drummer Cecil Brooks III. Blending elements of hard bop and soul-jazz, Braden launches the set with a driving take of "You Can't Hide Love," previously a hit for the R&B band Earth, Wind & Fire. He has equal success with another R&B favorite, the ballad "The Closer I Get to You," by transforming it into a viable soul-jazz vehicle, backed by Koehler's unpretentious chords and Brooks' minimal percussion. Another ...

| | Marc Bolan Early Singles 1964-1968 CDs (2006)
Double Exposure CD music
$38.69 Current collector prices would demand you drop several thousand pounds for the original Decca and Parlophone pressings of Marc Bolan's first recordings. This box set gives you the same music, in the same 7", 45-rpm format, for a fraction of the price -- and then some. In fact, only three of the singles within were actually released as 45s during Bolan's lifetime, the couplings of "The Wizard"/"Beyond the Rising Sun," "The Third Degree"/"San Francisco Poet," and "Hippy Gumbo"/"The Misfit." The remainder -- "The Road I'm On"/"Blowing in the Wind" (credited here to Toby Tyler), "Sleepy Maurice"/"Cat Black," and "Hot Rod Mama"/"Sarah Crazy Child" (Tyrannosaurus Rex) ...
