Time-Life's Classic Soul Ballads: Sweet Thing gathers 20 songs from various time frames and blends them into a collection of exactly what the title promises -- if you are willing to stretch your definition of soul to include Vanessa Williams' "Save the Best for Last" and Boyz II Men's "I'll Make Love to You," that is. In other words, soul snobs will not be pleased, but if all you want is a pleasant and smooth batch of old-school mood-setters like Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On," the Floaters' "Float On," the Brothers Johnson's "I'll Be Good to You," Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'," and Eddie Holman's "Hey There Lonely Girl" as well as some fine newish stuff (by comparison) from Tony! Toni! Toné! ("Anniversary") and Ready for the World ("Love You Down"), you could do a lot worse.
