| | Bayside Acoustic CD Bayside Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
The Long Island rock quartet Bayside had been garnering attention for their hopped-up, guitar-fueled emo since the turn of the millennium, but a tragic car accident in 2005 took the life of their drummer, temporarily halting the group's artistic and commercial momentum. In a brave display of perseverance, guitarist/singer Anthony Raneri and bassist Andrew Elderbaum performed this live acoustic set of Bayside material as a tribute to their departed bandmate. A 10-track EP, the disc also comes with a DVD of the moving performance.
Bayside released their second full-length album in August 2005 and jumped on the road feeling stronger as a unit than ever before. Then on Halloween, their world was shattered. A van accident on the way to a show left their bassist, Nick Ghanbarian, severely injured with a broken back and their drummer, John "Beatz" Holohan, dead. Not surprisingly, the remaining grief-stricken members -- Anthony Raneri and Jack O'Shea -- dropped off the tour. However, amidst an overwhelming display of support from family, friends, and fans, they decided their bandmates would want them to continue on. Banding together as an acoustic duo for the tour's completion, Raneri and O'Shea returned to the stage to pay tribute to their fallen friends. Their acoustic sets were so well received that fans wanted to hear more -- hence, the release of their Acoustic CD/DVD. The CD is based on their live set, comprised of studio acoustic versions of many of the songs from the show. "Winter" is the poignant, heartfelt tribute to Holohan that pulls at your heartstrings with its chorus, "An angel got his wings and we'll hold our heads up knowing that he's fine." Smoking Popes' "Megan" is made especially memorable with guest vocals from none other than Josh Caterer (only on the studio version), and bonus plugged-in tracks include the previously unreleased "Paternal Reversal" and the Elliott Smith cover "Baby Britain." The only live cut of the album also appears in the form of "Don't Call Me Peanut." Some songs actually sound better unplugged, as Raneri's voice is especially compelling set to acoustic guitars, thus making the audio CD worth fans' money on its own. The highlight of this release, however, is definitely the DVD, which captures Bayside's set from the final tour date at Chicago's House of Blues on December 11, 2005. After all, it's one thing to hear a song and know the unfortunate circumstances under which it was recorded, but an entirely different dynamic to be looking at people playing and reflecting on what must be going through their minds at that moment. And considering the tragic situation, many of their songs, like "They Looked Like Strong Hands" from their self-titled effort, take on a further, deeper meaning. In addition to the DVD's live set, bonus features include the recording of the audio album and a tribute to John Beatz. Together, the CD and DVD make Bayside's Acoustic a must-have for fans. And even those previously impartial to the band won't be able to hide their sympathy and admiration as the guys push forward. ~ Corey Apar

Acoustic album
$11.39 The outbursts of '80s thrash, classic British metal, and post-punk melodies forge The Illusion of Safety into an emocore epic of rare proportions. Atypically dynamic for its genre, Thrice stabs at punk-pop with grandiose guitar harmonies, hardcore vocal wails, and a Metallic (note the big "M") chunk that transforms its emo turnarounds into progressive hardcore theater. These design accomplishments warrant recommendation by themselves, but when the hooks of "Deadbolt" and "A Living Dance Upon Dead Minds" are set, Thrice reveals a stunning pop instinct that invites comparison to late-'90s rock & roll greats like At the Drive-In. Less inspired moments ("The Red Death") resemble Incubus on crank -- superior for sure, but annoyingly familiar. The emocore filler that concludes The Illusion of Safety ("So Strange I Remember You," "The Beltsville Crucible") verifies the group's fallibility. Probably the class of any No Motiv record, these tracks come off like throwaways here. One great producer away from unanimous Top Ten status, Thrice demonstrates transcendent potential on this 2001 sophomore full-length. ~ Jason Anderson

| | Bayside Sirens And Condolences CD (2004) Enhanced CD
Acoustic CD music
$9.89 Following in Thursday's footsteps, Long Island's Bayside breaks the typecasting of most Victory Records bands by brewing up a palatable batch of aggressive, melodic emo rock that draws on both Jawbox and the Alkaline Trio. Launched with "Masterpiece," which doesn't exactly live up to its title but is really good just the same, frontman Anthony juxtaposes hangovers and heartbreak before the quartet descends into the raw "Poison in My Veins," which also works the lovelorn angle with the finest harmony vocals this side of Midtown. While Bayside's lyrical approach fails to cover any new ground, the group is forceful and adept, whether it's creating a thunderous twin guitar roar on "Alcohol and Altar Boys" or conjuring up poppy, Promise Ring-like numbers like "A Synonym for Acquiesce." While the melodrama gets to be overbearing here and there, it's masked in the bombast of hard, driving tunes like "Kellum." Meanwhile, the quirky somberness of "If You're Bored" might be the most entertaining track of the pack, making Sirens and Condolences a pretty impressive entry. ~ John D. Luerssen

| | Amber Pacific Possibility And The Promise CD (2005)
Acoustic songs
$11.85 On the heels of their 2004 debut EP, Fading Days, the youthful Federal Way, WA-based emo-punk stalwarts in Amber Pacific return with a heightened presence of rock muscle on The Possibility and the Promise. Launching the album with the scorching, emotive "Everything We Were Has Become What We Are" -- which goes so far as to incorporate a string section at one point -- the bandmembers exhibit a musical depth beyond their early twenties, even if the simplistic Dashboard Confessional-like lyrics seem so high school. Still, frontman Matt Young is a star in waiting, as his peers borrow from everyone from Thrice to Matchbook Romance to AFI. Those punk and pop-punk inspirations aren't bad ones, as the hook-laden "Gone So Young" and the sappy punch of "The Right to Write Me Off" assure, and with time and little more ingenuity Amber Pacific could make the big time. ~ John D. Luerssen

| | Jack's Mannequin Everything In Transit CD (2005)
Acoustic album
$9.69 A side project to the emo band Something Corporate, Jack's Mannequin allows vocalist/keyboardist Andrew McMahon to indulge his passion for power-pop. A song cycle about a painful break-up, EVERYTHING IN TRANSIT applies undeniably catchy melodies to a narrative of emotional turmoil, with McMahon often evoking a younger, edgier Ben Folds. Although McMahon was diagnosed with leukemia shortly before this album's release, these dynamic tunes reveal an uplifting tenacity.
Jack's Mannequin: Andrew McMahon (vocals, harmonica, piano, organ, bells); Jim Wirt (guitar, bass instrument); Bobby "Raw" Anderson (guitar, background vocals); Patrick Warren (accordion, chamberlin, Moog synthesizer, sampler).
Additional personnel: Tommy Lee (drums); CJ Eiriksson (programming).

| | Bayside CD (2005) With DVD
Acoustic CD music
$10.09 With its self-titled sophomore album, Long Island-based band Bayside delivers another slice of poppy emo-core with delightfully rough edges and a strong sense of melody. The group's roots show through in its strong hardcore influence, which is especially apparent in the from-the-gut vocal performances of Anthony Raneri. With the help of big-time producers Shep Goodman and Kenny Gioia (Mandy Moore) the group refines its songwriting and offers a diverse sonic palette ranging from the jaunty ska-like feel of "Blame It On Bad Luck" to the English folk-influenced acoustic track "Don't Call Me Peanut."
Initial pressings contained a DVD.
This new release includes 11 tracks by the New York band.

| | Sing De Chorus: Calypso From Trinidad And Tobago CD (1992) (Import)
Acoustic music CDs
$14.49 This, from a recording made during Carnival 1991, is a collection of re-creations of the calypsos written by the greats of the 1930s -- Lord Executor, Lord Beginner, Atilla the Hun, Roaring Lion, Growling Tiger, Destroyer, Invader, Caresser, and others. Many of the greatest songs of the era are present. On top of re-using the lyrics of the greats, fully acoustic bands were set up to attempt at a re-creation of the full sound. The movement of the music is unmistakably calypso, and the topics of protest from the '30s (between the Depression and WWII, along with a ban on performing and recording calypso in Trinidad) all show through well. Not a bad rendition of most of the songs, though the originals can in some cases be found. Take a listen if you like the original versions of similar works. ~ Adam Greenberg

| | Kelly Willis Easy CD (2002)
Acoustic CD music
$10.15 Austin, TX, sure has it good -- a lot of amazing musicians are calling it home: Shawn Colvin, Patty Griffin, and the Dixie Chicks, to name a few. Add Kelly Willis to the list, because with Easy she has earned, or at least kept, her place in amazing-ville. Funny thing is, Willis is almost the perfect synthesis of the above-mentioned artists. She has a tender, romantic way in her songcrafting not at all unlike Colvin. Her voice has an rich, expressive ache, as does Griffin's. And she incorporates the best of country and bluegrass music into her own sonic foundry à la the Dixie Chicks (it certainly doesn't hurt much that she and Dixie Chick Emily Robison are sisters-in-law via the Robison brothers, Bruce and Charlie). With Easy, Willis offers up a half-dozen original compositions and a few very tasteful covers that are, well, easy -- easy on the ear, easy on the heart, easy on the mind. She's one of those gals who can say she was country when country wasn't cool, if only for her dignified and much-appreciated adherence to a real, organic, rooted sound that's as much Americana as anything else. This framework suits her well. The record would have been great without them, but it should also be noted that some very talented folks contributed a little something along the way. Alison Krauss, Chris Thile, Vince Gill, Dan Tyminski, and Ian McLagan all get a tip of the hat on this one, too. ~ Kelly McCartney
2002 album for the critically acclaimed singer/songwriter includes appearances from Vince Gill, Union Station's Dan Tyminski & Nickel Creek's Chris Thile. Ten tracks including a cover of Kirsty MacColl's 'Don't Come The Cowboy With Me Sunny Jim!'. Rykodisc.

| | Blue Eyed Charlie Simply Put CD (2000)
Acoustic songs
$13.95 Simply Put is the compilation of 14 songs ringing out the sweet, delicate tones of Charlie's 1964 Martin OO-18 acoustic guitar.Charlie combines the distinctive sound of a Navajo love flute on four of the songs, and four of the songs also have vocals with lyrics straight from the heart. At times, the music is peaceful and very mellow in selections such as Transcend and Blend and Nightfall in the Canyon, inspired by the soft echo of native sounds within historic Chaco Canyon in western New Mexico. But like most artists, Charlie has some amplitude to his moods.Pieces such as Clapper, Weasel Tag, and Jitterwinkie are pure acoustic guitar slightly on the wild side. It's the slightly wilder pieces that show Michael Hedges's influence on Charlie.Charlie credits Michael with bringing him out of his musical rut in the late 1980s.Many of the songs were inspired by the culture and landscape of New Mexico, although Weasel Tag could apply to weasels just about anywhere.Just as the title implies, Simply Put is just that.A nicely-aged Martin OO-18 acoustic guitar, a beautiful Navajo love flute, and some nice vocals from the heart of New Mexico.
