More quintessential hard bop from one of the genre's leading figures at the height of his considerable powers as a composer and trumpeter. Morgan had just returned to solo work a year earlier after his second stint with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers; in 1965 the trumpeter also released CORNBREAD and THE RUMPROLLER and did numerous sessions as a sideman. Morgan composed the title track, and three others including the Coots/Gillespie ballad "You Go To My Head" round things out.
"Yes I Can, No You Can't" opens with the rhythm section laying down a churning vamp; the horns enter with a typical Morgan statement, funky, swaggering and confident. "Speedball" is a bebop-style blues, but more relaxed, with a secondary theme appearing in the third chorus of the head. "Trapped," a modified minor blues, is more urgent, while "The Gigolo" is a brooding and majestic jazz waltz more evocative of a bullfight than of the ballroom. Throughout, the ensemble work is tight and the solos crackle with passion and joy.
Lee Morgan was the leading trumpeter in hard bop during the 1960s and he recorded quite a few classic albums for Blue Note. This is one of them. The CD reissue (which adds an alternate take of the title cut to the original five-song program) features Morgan at his best, whether playing his memorable blues "Speed Ball," an explorative ballad version of "You Go to My Head," a lengthy "The Gigolo," or his other two originals ("Yes I Can, No You Can't" and "Trapped"). There are no weak selections on this set and the playing by the leader, Wayne Shorter on tenor, pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and drummer Billy Higgins is beyond any serious criticism. ~ Scott Yanow

Gigolo album
$8.85 This release is something of a departure for the bold trumpet stylist. After the Latin-tinged dance-floor jams of THE SIDEWINDER (released about six months prior to this disc), Morgan turns somewhat reflective. The music is quieter, with a good deal of structural space and restrained, almost expressionistic playing. The title track opens the album and evokes ...
| | Bobby Hutcherson Oblique CD (1967) Remastered
Gigolo CD music
$8.45 Bobby Hutcherson's second quartet session, Oblique, shares both pianist Herbie Hancock and drummer Joe Chambers with his first, Happenings (bassist Albert Stinson is a newcomer). However, the approach is somewhat different this time around. For starters, there's less emphasis on Hutcherson originals; he contributes only three of the six pieces, with one from Hancock and two from the typically free-thinking Chambers. And compared to the relatively simple compositions and reflective soloing on Happenings, Oblique is often more complex in its post-bop style and more emotionally direct (despite what the title may suggest). The latter is especially true on the two opening Hutcherson ...

| | Hank Mobley Workout Edition: RVG Series CD (1961) Bonus Track; Remastered
Gigolo songs
$8.99 Recorded on March 26, 1961. Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather and Michael Cuscuna.
WORKOUT teams tenorman Hank Mobley with guitarist Grant Green for a rousing session that befits the title. Also in attendance are rhythm section aces Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, who provide swinging support. Muscular tunes like the title track and the aptly titled "Smokin'" are the focus here as the two expertly blow and wail through the changes like frenzied boxers in a title bout. Also included are Mobley's catchy blues number "Uh Huh" and masterful takes on the standards "The Best Things in Life Are Free" and "Three Coins in the Fountain." In all, it is easy to hear why WORKOUT is one of Mobley's quintessential recordings.
This is one of the best-known Hank Mobley recordings, and for good reason. Although none of his four originals ("Workout," "Uh Huh," ...
| | Dexter Gordon Gettin' Around CD (1965) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Gigolo album
$9.45 After two Blue Note LPs recorded in Europe (his adopted home since 1962), Gordon finally made it back to the States to record this mid-Sixties release. Curiously, the two previously unreleased tunes seem slightly out of place with the rest of the record, and feel more akin to the kind of work Gordon's labelmates were releasing at the time. "Flick of a Trick" is a sultry, walking eight-bar blues, while "Very Saxily Yours," distinguishes itself from the standards here by virtue of its riffing melody and use of hits during the head.
Having said that, part of the appeal of Gordon's approach is the way this album is built from standards. There's a sense of getting down to basics, from the passion and depths that can come out in a ballad to the sheer joy of swinging hard on the uptempo tunes. "Le Coiffeur" now sounds a little dated (like the theme from a lost Sixties sitcom), but there's something charming about that, as there is about the loping exuberance of "Shiny Stockings" and the presence of "Manha de Carnaval," a recent ...
