It might be fair to say that Detroit's Deadstring Brothers have more than a passing acquaintance with the Rolling Stones' EXILE ON MAIN STREET (play "Lights Go Out" and EXILE's "Shine a Light" back to back for evidence)--but bands have had worse influences. On their debut album, singer and main songwriter Kurt Marschke performs a creditable Mick Jagger-gone-country impersonation on the pretty "Moonlight Only Knows," while the group also nods to the Band on Robbie Robertson's "Get Up Jake" and the Flying Burritos on "'Til the Bleeding Stops." Throughout, the Deadstrings inject their alt country with a healthy dose of rock & roll raunch.

Uncut (p.106) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "There's lashings of white soul among the country honk, augmented by fat horns, the keening vocal back-ups of Masha Marjeh and Ross Westebur's spiky organ runs." Mojo (Publisher) (p.93) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] bright, passionate effort....It's never less than satisfying." Starving Winter Report album
$9.69 Every once in a while a singer/songwriter comes down the pike in the grand emotive tradition of Neil Young and Van Morrison. In the early 2000s, the quietly intense folk of Iron & Wine and the rootsy-experimental stylings of Sufjan Stevens continued that lineage. Ray LaMontagne, whose impressive 2004 debut, TROUBLE, draws on alt-country, roots rock, and progressive folk in a unique, strikingly ...

| | Neko Case Fox Confessor Brings The Flood CDs (2006) Digipak
Starving Winter Report music CDs
$13.49 On this assured and inventive outing, Case does not disappoint, as she revisits the haunting atmosphere of earlier offerings, but also broadens her sound. Incorporating elements of country, early rock & roll, and moody film scores, Case creates a fascinatingly anachronistic aesthetic, evoking some enigmatic lost era with songs such as the lilting "Star Witness," the soulful "John Saw That Number," and the ominously orchestral "Dirty Knife." While Case--with her bold, sensual, and dynamic voice--is clearly the main attraction of FOX CONFESSOR, the record also features an impressive supporting cast, including the Band's Garth Hudson (piano, organ), Giant Sand's Howe Gelb (guitar, ...

Starving Winter Report music CDs
$9.69 On their third outing the Rothko boys turn their bass-only sound into something of a beautifully seductive black hole of sound. Once you're in, forget it; the vibe is luxuriant and druggy, so sensually seductive and warm, you'll feel as if you are floating on a sea of muted blue clouds. Unlike their previous efforts, Rothko has added to their triple bass configuration ...
