Based on Jonathan Larson's bohemian rock musical, this film tells the story of a group of social outcasts struggling to live in the moment yet survive the realities of New York's grity East Village. Rosario Dawson, Taye Diggs, Wilson Jermaine Heredia, Jesse L. Martin, Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal, Anthony Rapp, Tracie Thoms, and Sarah Silverman star. Extras include audio commentary by director Chris Columbus and selected cast, feature-length documentary, deleted scenes & musical performances, and PSA for Larson's Performing Arts Foundation and the National Marfan Foundation. Director Christopher Columbus (MRS. DOUBTFIRE, HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE) adapts the hit Broadway musical of the same name to the big screen in RENT. A modern spin on the opera LA BOHEME, RENT tells the story of eight friends dealing with life and love in Manhattan's Alphabet City in 1989. Wannabe filmmaker Mark (Anthony Rapp) and singer/songwriter Roger (Adam Pascal) are facing eviction at the hands of their former roommate and current landlord, Benny (Taye Diggs). Benny has married rich, moved out of the neighborhood, and wants to build a state-of-the-art studio where the local tent city stands. Their downstairs neighbor, vivacious Mimi (Rosario Dawson), who strips at a local club to feed her heroin habit, takes a shine to Roger, a self-imposed recluse and former junkie whose last girlfriend died of AIDS. Their friend, Collins (Jesse L. Martin), returns to town and quickly falls for Angel (Wilson Jermaine Heredia), a glamorous, gracious, HIV positive transvestite. Finally, there is Maureen (Idina Menzel), a spitfire and performance artist who is planning a protest against Benny's plans and has dumped Mark for cerebral Joanne (Tracie Thoms), a lawyer.
Over the course of a year, the friends face poverty, drug addiction, break-ups, reconciliations, eviction, and AIDS. Despite these challenges, they find support, hope, and acceptance in each other, all the while embracing the bohemian lifestyle that was so much a part of the Lower East Side. Newcomers Dawson and Thoms mix seamlessly with the original cast members, and Columbus introduces some interesting staging locations. With a concept, music, and lyrics by the late Jonathan Larson, RENT is an exuberant rock-&-roll musical with the underlying message that love can prevail despite all odds and that, ultimately, there really is no day but today.

-- Barry Walters, Rolling Stone "[T]here's a relentless sincerity to RENT that's ultimately disarming....When the film succeeds, it does so because it manages to mine the emotional seams of painful premature death..."

-- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly "[The performers] bring the ardent conviction of young strivers to the material, which is just what it needs."

Seasons of Love I cannot get the soundtrack out of my head!! Rent is a wonderful drama with a riveting musical score. I mean really, who can get the "Seasons of Love" (525,600 minutes) out of their head. It still keeps on playing on my head. The original cast along with Rosario Dawson is mesmerizing in how they cope with paying last year's rent and dealing with HIV. The movis is phenomental!! Well these six pop superstars don't sing opera, but they are certainly equipped with the beautiful, powerful voices of opera singers. There is even a special guest appearance by the great Carole King, ...

$6.99 For his third feature film, British director Sam Mendes (AMERICAN BEAUTY) turns to the pages of Anthony Swofford's 2003 book on his experiences in the first Gulf War, and enlists William Broyles Jr.--a former Lieutenant who fought in Vietnam--to convert it into a screenplay. Mendes's film strays into FULL METAL JACKET territory as it opens, with young recruit Swofford (Jake Gyllenhaal) undertaking some rigorous basic training under the steely, watchful eye of Staff Sgt. Sykes (Jamie Foxx). Impressed, Sykes invites Swofford to join his team, and partners him with Troy (Peter Sarsgaard), ultimately taking them to Saudi Arabia to fight in the first Gulf War. But once they arrive in the punishing heat of the desert, the long wait for battle sends many of the Marines dangerously close to the brink of insanity.
Drawing on the experience of acclaimed cinematographer Roger Deakins (THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION) to help viewers get a close-up taste of the Marines' punishing life in the desert, Mendes's film enters into deeply unsettling territory, the likes of which many cinemagoers won't have experienced since Martin Sheen lost his tenuous grip on reality in APOCALYPSE NOW. Indeed, Mendes deploys a few similar tactics to those that made Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 film so effective: a hip soundtrack that uses songs from artists as varied as Public Enemy and the Rolling Stones, and a feeling of disillusionment and futility among the troops that really digs ...
| | Bonnes Femmes DVD (1960) Widescreen
Rent review
$24.49 The dull lives and lofty bourgeois aspirations of four Parisian shop girls serves as the point of departure for Claude Chabrol's haunting French New Wave classic, LES BONNES FEMMES. As the girls count the minutes until their working shift ends, they gossip and contemplate their prospects for happiness. Jane just wants to have fun, Ginette secretly dreams of being a dance-hall singer, Rita longs to get married, and Jacqueline pines after her one true love. The film's luscious black and white quasi-documentary mise-en-scene follows each girl through the treacherous world of early 1960s Paris. Their lives are filled with lecherous men, seedy smoke-filled nightclubs, boring jobs, and uncertain futures. An underlying atmosphere of sadness and foreboding permeates the film as the girls bounce haplessly between work and pleasure, never forming real trusting relations and always frantically searching for the elusive happiness that each of them so desperately needs. When shy, self-effacing, and loveless ...

$10.05 As a child, May (Angela Bettis) had a lazy eye and had to wear a patch, which kept other children from befriending her. Her mother gave her a handmade doll, which became her only companion. Now, as a young adult, the doll is still May's only friend. But when she meets Adam (Jeremy Sisto) at a coffee shop and feels a strong attraction toward him, she tries to overcome her shyness and pursue him. When he ends their very brief relationship, however, it cements May's belief that no person is entirely good--only PARTS of them are good--and she decides to put that concept into frightening practice. A bizarre, darkly comic, and bloody horror treat, MAY is a strikingly original directorial debut from Lucky McKee.

$7.75 Director Martin Campbell (GOLDENEYE) balances a romantic tale, serious political commentary, and beautifully shot scenery from exotic locations in BEYOND BORDERS. Oscar winner Angelina Jolie gives a moving performance inspired by her real-life U.N. work, and has the perfect romantic foil in Clive Owen. Ostensibly a tale of romance triumphing against the odds, this is in fact a multifaceted story that deals with its various topics in a visually arresting style.
BEYOND BORDERS follows the problematic blossoming romance between busy American socialite Sarah Jordan (Jolie), and rogue doctor Nick Callahan (Owen). The two initially meet in 1984 at a charity event in London. Sarah is still flushed with excitement from her recent marriage, but is nevertheless enchanted by Nick's impassioned speech on behalf of starving children in Ethiopia. Sarah decides to help the cause in Africa, meeting Nick there and sparking a romantic connection which is cut short because of family and work commitments. Four years later, Sarah finds herself alone after a torrid divorce. Her work for the United Nations now consumes her thoughts, and when the chance to travel to war-torn Cambodia--and reunite with Nick--arises, it proves too good to turn down. The two immediately hit it off, but Nick's commitment to his work once again causes them to separate. Five more years pass, and when Sarah receives a call that Nick has been captured ...
