This is the fourth release on Leo Records by the giants of the European scene: John Wolf Brennan (Switzerland/Ireland) - piano, Arkady Shilkloper(Russia) - horns, Tscho Theissing (Austria) -violin, voice, Georg Breinschmid (Austria) - bass, voice. Pago L
Pago Libre/Pago Libre: Tscho Theissing (vocals, violin); Georg Breinschmid (vocals, acoustic bass); Arkady Shilkloper (horns); John Wolf Brennan (piano). The music of Pago Libre is as eccentric as its instrumentation. Each of the four musicians is quite talented and versatile. Their music draws upon swinging jazz, classical, and European folk music, combining together its influences and inspirations in quirky and often-witty fashion. One is never quite sure when the music is tongue-in-cheek, although "Waltz for Alfred Hitchcock" seems a certainty. The results are episodic, thoroughly unpredictable, always musical, and thought provoking. Open-minded listeners will find much to enjoy here. ~ Scott Yanow
The Wire (p.75) - "Hard to judge whether this fine group, now of more than a decade's standing, evolves or simply gets better at its Eurofolky/classical/minimalist/swing thing." Pago Libre Stepping Out Songs | 1. | W 9 St. |

| | Robben Ford Soul On Ten CD (2009)
Stepping Out
$15.29 Personnel: Robben Ford (vocals, guitar); Neal Evans (Hammond b-3 organ); Toss Panos (drums). Audio Mixer: John Paterno. Photographer: George Wells. Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy generated by the stage environment, focuses attention on the guitarist's skills as a creative six-string bluesman who expands the narrow confines of the genre by adding soul and jazz influences. He kicks off the set with a lazy, wah-wah enhanced "Supernatural," the title track to his 1999 disc, and revs ...
| | Herbie Hancock Gershwin's World CD (1998) Hybrid; SACD Hybrid
Stepping Out
$15.49 GERSHWIN'S WORLD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group. "St. Louis Blues" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal(s). This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Gershwin's World is a tour de force for Herbie Hancock, transcending genre and label, and ranking among the finest recordings of his lengthy career. Released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin's birth, this disc features jazzman Hancock with a classy collection of special guests. The most surprising of Hancock's guest stars is Joni Mitchell, who delivers a gorgeously sensual vocal on "The Man I Love," then provides an airy, worldly take on "Summertime." On these two tracks, she shows she has come a long way from her folksinger beginnings ...
| | Ted Nash Mancini Project CD (2008)
Stepping Out
$13.65 Personnel: Ted Nash (alto flute, piccolo); Frank Kinbrough, Frank Kimbrough (piano); Rufus Reid (upright bass); Matt Wilson (drums). Recording information: Maggie's Farm, Buck's County, PA (12/18/2007/12/19/2007). One of the greatest movie composers is the late Henry Mancini, whose works adorn four decades' worth (from the '50s through the '80s) of good to great films. Jazz saxophonist Ted Nash, whose father Dick and uncle Ted frequently worked with Mancini, has now fashioned an exemplary tribute to him called, fittingly enough, THE MANCINI PROJECT. (While not strictly speaking ...

| | Count Basie Basie Swings, Bennett Sings CD (1959)
Stepping Out
$9.19 Personnel: Count Basie (piano); Tony Bennett (vocals); Marshall Royal, Frank Wess, Frank Foster, Billy Mitchell, Charles Fowlkes (saxophone); Thad Jones, Snooky Young, Wendell Culley, Joe Newman (trumpet); Henry Coker, Al Grey, Benny Powell (trombone); Ralph Sharon (piano); Freddie Green (guitar); Eddie Jones (bass); Sonny Payne (drums). Producer: Teddy Reig. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at Capitol Studios, New York, New York from January 3-5, 1959. Includes liner notes by Barry Ulanov. The Roulette half of the two Bennett/Basie sessions is a band singer's paradise, with the Basie band caught at a robust and swinging peak and Bennett never sounding happier or looser in front of a microphone. The Count himself, alas, appears on piano only on two numbers ("Life Is a Song" ...
