On No Such Animal, guitarist Tim Mungenast breaks with his psychedelic pop past by recruiting saxman Ken Field (Birdsongs of the Mesozoic) and the rhythm section from Cul de Sac (Michael Bloom on bass and Jon Proudman on drums) for an album of completely improvised music, but this is no furious free-for-all blowing session. These guys are all excellent listeners, and take a completely cooperative approach to making music. The songs evolve slowly; it's nearly five minutes into "Debut Sea" before any real soloing starts and even then, there's never a hint of grandstanding. "The Iron Bell" is a sparse track with a very Asian use of silence and space featuring flute, Mungenast's prepared guitar, and Bloom's bass harmonics with Proudman leaving his kit in favor of a couple gongs. "Luminous/Ominous" has the rhythm section setting up an easy groove for Field's excellent flute and sax work, with Mungenast content to wait nearly eight minutes before really making his presence felt on a really nice solo with some interesting tapping work (which is closer to Frank Zappa than Eddie Van Halen). "Sitar-Tha" has Mungenast playing electric and slide sitar in conversation with Field's alto over a simple vamp that gets stretched and contracted. The album builds in intensity, culminating with "Mungulator Ritual," where Mungenast adopts one of the sickest, most deranged guitar tones imaginable with Field attempting to match him with a tart tone and multiphonics in front of a surging, insistent rhythm that recalls the end of "If 6 Was 9." It's an impressive set that has got to be one of the most egoless sessions ever recorded. Well done. ~ Sean Westergaard

From tinymixtapes.com:It’s no small feat finding a balance between the nonchalant looseness that at least partially defines indie rock as a genre and the cohesiveness generally necessary to draw in listeners. Many bands careen off in either direction, resulting in something more avant with little chance of building an audience, or something far too banal for hipsters to rock out to; but, judging by their second release, 35, 36, Cult Maze appear to have no trouble avoiding these pitfalls. The mastermind here is singer/guitarist Jay Lobley, who sounds eerily similar to Tom Verlaine with both his chosen instruments. Still, Lobley comes off as no copycat. His style is more forthright, confident, and — dare I say? — ballsy. This especially comes through in his guitar playing, when Cult Maze seamlessly move from delicate and layered to aggressive and dense. To the unsuspecting, "Slow Vein" will likely provide a swift kick to the ass with its dynamic shifting from quirky, lean synth pop to muscle-flexing riff rock. Of course, the core of the sound is more the former than the latter, but the way these bursts of uncharacteristic ferocity serve to contextualize the more subdued moments is elegant, and bespeaks the maturity of this ...

Right Said Fred1989 RIGHT SAID FRED formed. 1989-90 Fred and Richard did gigs for a year in the UK before hooking up with Rob Manzoli as a 3rd member and writing partner. 1990-91 Fred, Rich and Rob had their first writing session and the outcome was 'I'm Too Sexy'. They tracked down a programmer who helped them develop the groove and style of the track and they found a studio in Ealing that had recently gone bankrupt. They booked two long night sessions and recorded vocals and guitar. Having run out of cash they played the rough mix to anyone who would listen hoping for some friendly advice EMI, Warners, Sony, Universal in fact everyone passed on the song. After meeting a DJ/re-mixer Tommy D the boys got the final mix and played it to an independent plugger who got lucky at Radio One with the producer of the Simon Bates show. He played 'I'm Too Sexy' straight to air and the phones (thank the lord) went crazy and the discerning people of Great Britain had spoken. 1991-92 'I'm Too Sexy' spends 6 weeks at No2 and approximately 4 months in the UK Top 10. The song spreads very quickly internationally and charts all through Europe. No1 in 32 countries including the US where it spent 10 weeks at No1 on the Billboard Sales Chart! 'Don’t Talk Just Kiss' was the 2nd single which reached No3 Christmas 1991.it also enjoyed a lot of chart success world wide including South America, Japan and was No1 on the US Dance Chart 1992 Deeply Dippy' was the 3rd single and Right Said Fred's first UK No1. This was quickly followed by their debut Platinum album 'UP' which entered the UK album charts at No1. The band toured and promoted for the rest of 1992 in the US, Japan, Australia and Europe. The 'UP' album sold in excess of 7 million worldwide. Fred, Richard and Rob were awarded 2 Ivor Novello's for 'I'm too Sexy' and 'Deeply Dippy' plus a Brits nomination. FUN FRED FACT...... Right Said Fred was the first British artist since The Beatles to reach No1 in the US with a debut single! 1993. Having written and recorded ...
