Jazzology CD Sampler #2: Story Of Chicago Style
$23.29 Personnel: Jan Garbarek (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone). Audio Mixers: Jan Erik Kongshaug; Jan Garbarek; Manfred Eicher. It's hard to believe that after recording as a leader for 40 years, DRESDEN: IN CONCERT is Jan Garbarek's first-ever live album. For those who think that Garbarek abandoned jazz some time ago, this will be a shock. DRESDEN is an engaged, kinetic, double-disc, two-hour performance of his quartet playing in the modern jazz idiom and using all of its tenets--from complex harmonics and rhythmic invention to extended lyric improvisation--to create a tour de force that honors all the music he holds dear. Garbarek plays tenor, soprano, and selje flute here, and is accompanied by his ...

| | Roots Underground Tribesman Assault CD (1977)
Jazzology CD Sampler #2: Story Of Chicago Style
$14.69 Personnel: Jerry Hitler (guitar); Jah Scotty (drums). Recording information: Sounds Unlimited Studio. Photographer: Clyde Nelson. Arranger: Lloyd "Bullwackie" Barnes. Newly arrived in the Big Apple, producer Lloyd "Bullwackie" Barnes set up a studio in the Bronx in the early '70s and launched his Wackies label soon after. Tribesman Assault was one of his first releases, a scintillating set of dubs plus one vocal track, credited to his studio band, Roots Underground. The set's riddims were recorded previously while Barnes was still working in Jamaica -- the set, however, was overdubbed in New York and mixed down there, with Prince Douglas grabbing both production and engineering credits and Jah Upton the mixing honors. The Wackies label quickly established a unique reggae sound far removed from the Jamaican norm, and that's already evident on this set. Eschewing the heavy, heavy dub sounds of the dancehalls, Tribesman Assault prefers a lighter, less oppressive style, with many of the tracks falling into the instrumental category rather than "proper" dubs. The numbers themselves ...

| | Ben Monder Excavation CD (2000)
Jazzology CD Sampler #2: Story Of Chicago Style
$13.45 Personnel: Ben Monder (guitar); Theo Blechmann (vocals); Skuli Sverrisson (electric bass); Jim Black (drums, percussion). Recorded at the Clubhouse, Germantown, New York on June 30 and July 19 & 20, 1999. Personnel: Ben Monder; Jim Black, Skúli Sverrisson, Theo Blechmann. Guitarist Ben Monder packs this highly original album with a panoply of ideas. The dreamlike voice of Theo Bleckmann gives the music an almost medieval, spooky quality. The compositions couldn't be more modern, however. "Ellenville" and "Hatchet Face" are the album's epic statements, combining serious grooves with technically staggering ensemble passages, wordless vocalizing, and brilliant guitar playing. How Bleckmann manages to sing Monder's highly complex lines is a mystery. "Mistral" and "Windowpane" are built around dense, repeated arpeggio figures that spiral into patterns ...

| | Andrew Oldham Orchestra Rolling Stones Songbook CD (Import) Import; United Kingdom
Jazzology CD Sampler #2: Story Of Chicago Style
$22.05 ROLLING STONES SONGBOOK is a remastered reissue of The Andrew Oldham Orchestra's orchestral and lounge versions of Rolling Stones songs. At the time, Andrew Loog Oldham must have looked the right part for releasing this record. It was such a nod to the square culture that the Rolling Stones were attempting to wipe away that you had to figure it for a joke. Sure, there were symphonic Beatles records, but somehow that was to be expected from them. Not the Stones -- no, they were rebels. Oldham was brought up on middle-of-the-road sounds and orchestral soundtracks as a kid, though, and making this album was a dream come true for him -- one that the huge success of his charges could make happen. He was also in love with the huge sound of Phil Spector and was directly inspired by the sound of Jack Nitzche's instrumental album, The Lonely Surfer. With the help of arranger David Whitaker, Oldham made a record that paid homage to all of those influences, and 40 years later it sounds quite good. It even rocks surprisingly hard at times, thanks to the wise move of having crack session men like Nicky Hopkins, John Paul Jones, Big Jim Sullivan, ...
