Personnel includes: George Benson (vocals, guitar); David Sanborn (alto saxophone); Chaka Khan, Lani Groves (background vocals); Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Jon Faddis, Paul Jackson, Jr., David Spinozza, Gus Falcon, Ira Siegel, Alan Raph, Lew Delgatto, Tom Malone, Harry Lookofsky, Jonathan Abramowitz, Maximoff, Emanuel Vardi, Harold Kohon, Marilyn Wright, Joe Malin, Fred Buldrini, Richard Young, Gerald Tarack, Guy Lumia, Jerry Hey, David Paich, James Newton-Howard, Pete Cannarozzi, Steve Porcaro, Greg Phillinganes, Nathan East, Will Lee, Anthony Jackson, Marcus Miller, Steve Jordan, Steve Ferrone, Leslie Ming, Carlos Vega, Steve Gadd, Lenny Castro, Sammy Figueroa, Bashiri Johnson. Engineers: Michael O'Reilly, Gary Skardina, Jeremy Smith. Recorded at Atlantic Studios, New York, and Music Grinder Studios, Los Angeles, California. In search of more platinum, Benson turned to one-time Atlantic Records ace producer Arif Mardin for support. Yet Mardin's best days seemed to be behind him, as this mostly routine package of period R&B backbeats, synthesizer rhythm tracks, and love songs indicates. Any competent soul vocalist could have fit in comfortably here. For jazz fans, Benson's albums at this point became a search for buried treasure, for his guitar time was extremely limited. But when you do encounter a Benson solo, hang on tight. "Love Will Come Again," otherwise a routine soul bumper, concludes with a magnificent solo in octaves that Wes Montgomery would have envied, breathtaking in its economy and swing. Also, check out the instrumental "In Search of a Dream" for proof that George Benson could still burn. ~ Richard S. Ginell IN YOUR EYES, produced by one-time Atlantic Records ace producer Arif Mardin, features the strong vocals that awarded Benson much success in the late '70's. Benson's takes on period hits such as "Lady Love Me (One More Time)," "In Your Eyes," "Feel Like Makin' Love," "Use Me," and "Love Will Come Again" are included in this mix of ten R&B love songs. Jazz fans will have to wait out the album's vocals in order to get to the George Benson they love; he comes through with the guitar licks on the instrumental track "In Search of a Dream." While heavy on the synthesized rhythm tracks and pre-programmed back beats, IN YOUR EYES does manage to succeed as a romantic pop/instrumental album, reminiscent of some of Bob James' recordings from the same period. | | Traffic John Barleycorn Must Die CD (1970) (Import) England; Remastered; Germany
In Your Eyes
$11.99 Remastered reissue features three bonus cuts and a twelve page booklet. At only 22 years old, Steve Winwood sat down in early 1970 to fulfill a contractual commitment by making his first solo album, on which he intended to play all the instruments himself. The record got as far as one backing track produced by Guy Stevens, "Stranger to Himself," before Winwood called his erstwhile partner from Traffic, Jim Capaldi, in to help out. The two completed a second track, "Every Mother's Son," then, with Winwood and Island Records chief Chris Blackwell moving to the production chores, brought in a third Traffic member, Chris Wood, to work on the sessions. Thus, Traffic, dead and buried for more than a year, was reborn. The band's new approach was closer to what it perhaps should have been back in 1967, basically a showcase for Winwood's voice and instrumental work, with Wood adding reed parts and Capaldi drumming and occasionally singing harmony vocals. If the original Traffic bowed to the perceived commercial necessity of crafting hit singles, the new Traffic was more interested in stretching out. Heretofore, no studio recording had run longer than the five-and-a-half minutes of "Dear Mr. Fantasy," but four of the six selections on John Barleycorn Must Die exceeded six minutes. Winwood and company used the time to play extended instrumental variations on compelling folk- and jazz-derived riffs. Five of the six songs had lyrics, and their tone ...
