Jimmy Witherspoon laid out two great records in 1962 on Reprise, Spoon and this one. Roots places the great blues singer and guitarist in the company of saxophonist Ben Webster, trumpeter Gerald Wilson, and a rhythm section consisting of pianist Ernie Freeman and drummer Jim Miller. The mood is laid-back, down-home, and full of emotion and sentiment. The warmth of Witherspoon's voice on material like "Your Red Wagon," "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water," "Key to the Highway" (in one of the more unique versions ever recorded), and Jimmy Rushing's "Did You Ever" is on the other side of lonesome. Webster and Wilson underscore the sung lines with fills that accent the deep blue in Witherspoon's vocal. Jay McShann's "Confessin' the Blues" is a more jazzed-up arrangement, but Witherspoon's deep in the R&B groove here, taking a hint from Joe Turner. The finger-popping read of Turner's "It's a Low Down Dirty Shame" is in the gutbucket; the rhythm section swings hard. It's not as raucous as the original, but Witherspoon's smooth, clear, and deep register is beautifully complemented first by Wilson's solo and then by Webster's. The real stunner is near the end, when the band takes on Big Bill Broonzy's "Just a Dream," where Witherspoon wails and moans the blues. It's just chilling. This is one of those recordings that is a true hidden classic. It was reissued on CD in 2006 by Collectables. ~ Thom Jurek

This CD contains B.B. King's first ABC-Paramount studio efforts -- Mr. Blues (1962) and Confessin' the Blues (1965), respectively. While there are inevitable similarities between the projects, offering them back-to-back allows listeners an acute sense of King's rapid maturation and development during what was by all accounts the nexus of the guitarist/vocalist's career. Talk To Me is the title of the latest album from Philipp Fankhauser, the highly regarded blues artist based in Thun, Switzerland, and his first for Memphis International Records. Fankhauser is well known to European audiences but he is also familiar to North Americans as a result of his role as guest vocalist with the band of the late blues great Johnny "Clyde" Copeland. While the bulk of Talk To Me is comprised of l Fankhauser originals it does include two Johnny Copeland compositions and Shemekia Copeland, Johnny's daughter and a renowned star in her own right, penned the liner notes. "Philipp will always be very special to the Copeland family; his music is special for just about everyone," she wrote.The album includes a version of "Members Only," a song that was an R&B hit for Bobby Bland in the 1980s and produced for Fankhauser by Dennis Walker (Robert Cray, B.B. King, Maria Muldaur) with an appearance by the Memphis Horns. Bobby Bland finally met Fankhauser in the '90s and expressed great admiration for the Swissman's interpretation of one of his signature songs.Downbeat's review of Talk To Me noted "Fankhauser doesn't sound the least bit like a visitor from Switzerland that unrealistically fancies himself a blues singer. He displays empathy for Johnny Copeland songs, and he dramatizes soul-blues originals without over extending his voice or wearing out his welcome will too strong a reverential tone."Despite the fact that he was born and raised in Switzerland, Fankhauser has long been inspired by American blues artists and he has dedicated much of his life to following in their footsteps. At the age of twelve, he was introduced to the music of Sunnyland Slim and, despite the fact that he could not understand the lyrics; he was completely captivated by the music.
