Message / Desert Winds
$40.49 Definitive's 2006 release of an 88-track compendium of Duke Ellington's Capitol recordings dating from the years 1953-1955 illuminates a period during which the man who more than anyone else had perfected the art of big-band jazz during the 1920s, '30s, and '40s had to scuffle to maintain his jazz orchestra at a time when small combos and star vocalists were getting most of the gigs and recording contracts. It is therefore fitting, perhaps, that Ellington chose to record with a trio in between big-band sessions during December 1953, resulting in an album's worth of wonderful chamber jazz that appeared on the Capitol album Piano Reflections. Hearing that material presented in chronologic context with the big-band recordings of 1953-1955 is a special treat. The orchestra was packed with accomplished improvisers; its trumpeters included Clark Terry, Cat Anderson, Willie Cook, Ray Nance and Gerald Wilson, who also exercised his skills ...
| | Charles Lloyd Rabo De Nube CD (2008)
Message / Desert Winds
$15.05 Charles Lloyd: Charles Lloyd (alto flute, tarogato, tenor saxophone); Jason Moran (piano); Reuben Rogers (double bass); Eric Harland (drums, percussion). Recording information: Theater Basel (04/27/2007). Photographer: Dorothy Darr. A fixture on the jazz scene since the early 1960s, reedist Charles Lloyd has played with practically everyone under the sun and has demonstrated remarkable variety in his playing, ranging across post-bop, chamber jazz, free jazz, soul-jazz, and pop. Lloyd was approaching 70 at the time of RABO DE NUBE's release in 2008; the disc, a live performance, is some of the most vital and engaging of his career. In part this is thanks to the spectacularly talented personnel: pianist Jason Moran, drummer Eric Harlan, and bassist Reuben Rogers are some of the best younger players in the game. While Lloyd's sax and flute work stand out (on "Ramanujan" he also plays tarogato, a Middle Eastern wind instrument), this is undeniably a group effort, one ...

| | Vinicius Cantuaria Silva CD (2005)
Message / Desert Winds
$14.59 Personnel: Michael Leonhart (trumpet). Brazilian singer/songwriter/guitarist Vinicius Cantuaria first came to public attention back in the 1970s while working with Caetano Veloso and other high-profile artists, but his solo career took off on an international level in the '90s with a series of quiet, sophisticated releases that incorporated Tropicalia and bossa nova roots with a decidedly cutting-edge sensibility. As with previous outings, SILVA meshes the rhythmic complexities of Cantuaria's post-Joao Gilberto acoustic guitar framework with syncopated percussion and the occasional dab of electronics. If anything, Cantuaria seems ...
