| | Dengue Fever Venus On Earth CD (2008)
Your Song
$12.89 This Los Angeles-based band features a Cambodian vocalist (she sings in both English and Khmer) and takes as its primary inspiration the Cambodian rock of the 1960s. As there isn't exactly an overload of bands playing retro-psychedelic Cambodian rock in America in the 2000s, Dengue Fever stands out, and especially so with their beautifully realized second album, VENUS ON EARTH.
Dengue Fever's music is a heady cocktail of reverb-laden guitar, Farfisa organ, horns, and shuffling rhythms that channels jazz, lounge music, Southeast Asian pop, and spy movie music. "Woman in Her Shoes" sounds like a cross between Nico and the Zombies, and "Seeing Hands" recalls a mix of the Velvet Underground and a Bollywood tune, while "Monsoon of Perfume" is as effortlessly entrancing as Roy ...

| | Tinariwen Amassakoul CD (2004) (Import)
Your Song
$14.89 Tinariwen strip rock down to its basic building blocks of rhythm, guitars, and voice. On their second CD there are no fancy studio tricks or multiple overdubs. They stick to what they've shown they do well -- keep the music raw and emotional. While there are similarities to the desert blues of Mali, these Tuareg nomads from the Western Sahara are as much as rock band as the Stones at their best, capable ...

Your Song
$9.59 Recorded live at Sweetwater, Mill Valley, California in 1992.
Every night any hardcore Hot Tuna fan goes to sleep, he/she should count their lucky stars for the Relix record label. The company has issued countless classic Tuna shows for mass consumption--although most of their shows circulate among fans as bootlegs, Relix Records offers certain shows in an improved sonic format, as evidenced by such releases as 1996's two part CLASSIC ELECTRIC and CLASSIC ACOUSTIC, as well as LIVE AT SWEETWATER parts one and two. The first edition (released in 1992) proved to be the first "unplugged" Tuna album featuring new ...
| | Park Building A Better CD (2006) Enhanced CD
Your Song
$11.39 While many of their indie-emo peers have exploded to the top of the underground (or out of it altogether) on the strength of one album or random demos, Illinois' Park has quietly been building itself a rather respected name and notable following since the '90s. And with their third album for Lobster, Park proves that the love and high anticipation shown to them leading up to the release of Building a Better _____ is for good reason. On this mellower outing than prior efforts, the band uses tight yet spacious arrangements that can be fairly dark, but remain highly enjoyable. Songs are both tender and aggressive, and instruments assert themselves without overpowering the delivery of singer/guitarist Ladd Mitchell (or vice versa). His voice may be in that slightly nasal realm favored by many, but coupled with the rest of the music, this never becomes a downfall. "Chica Chica" is both pensive and jerky, emitting an urgency that rises and falls under the direction of curving guitars and commanding drums. And one of the strongest tracks present, "Mississippi Burning," ...
