Small Faces Ogden's Nut Gone Flake CDs  (1968) England; Deluxe Edition

Red album
CD $33.75  Audio Samples
The Small Faces present their four disc U.K. import reissue release OGDEN'S NUT GONE FLAKE. Having begun their career as the archetypal Mod band, the Small Faces latterly embraced traces of flower-power's whimsy. Astute enough not to sacrifice their identity, the quartet retained a distinctive perspective, as evinced by a string of superb pop singles, including "Here Comes The Nice" and "Itchycoo Park." A sense of pop melody and adventurism culminated on this album which encompassed tongue-in-cheek fun ("Lazy Sunday") and passionate love songs ("Afterglow"). Steve Marriott's voice remains completely self-assured and the group's characteristic organ-based swell is often enhanced by P.P. Arnold's emotional backing vocals. Eccentric comedian Stanley Unwin narrates the concept suite "Happiness Stan," but the music is strong enough to withstand the novelty tag. OGDENS' NUT GONE FLAKE was the Small Faces' swan-song, at least until an ill-starred reunion, but it proved a fitting end to a golden era. Having begun their career as the archetypal Mod band, the Small Faces latterly embraced traces of flower-power's whimsy. Astute enough not to sacrifice their identity, the quartet retained a distinctive perspective, as evinced ...

Manfred Mann Solar Fire CD  (1973)

Red CD music
CD $37.25
Fans of muscular progressive rock will love Solar Fire, a concept album loosely designed around cosmology. The album opens with the majestic "Father of Night, Father of Day," which has the drive and complexity of a prime King Crimson track. As unlikely as it may seem, the track was controversial in Mann's native South Africa because of the "Father of black, father of white" line, implying that apartheid might not extend to infinite space. The album moves on to the progressive rock/jazz fusion of "In the Beginning, Darkness," a swinging, even funky track that benefits from soulful vocals by Doreen Chanter and Irene Chanter of the Grove Singers. The same duo contributes to the title track, a slow piece that begins with a fairly standard rock structure and incorporates a massive progressive jam in the middle. The instrumental suite which follows is a showcase for the combination of angular, sometimes slightly dissonant guitar with fluid keyboard work, and the band rocks straight through with stately grace. Once again, one is reminded of early King Crimson, which was about the only other group to turn out complex, shifting instrumentals of this quality. The album closes with the strange "Earth, the Circle, Pt. 1," which begins almost like a nursery rhyme, switches to a jazz shuffle, and fades out as an odd combination of the two. The album was groundbreaking when ...

Digitally remastered by Bob Ludwig & Brian Lee (Gateway Mastering Studios, Portland, Maine). Master sound releases are 24-karat gold CDs remastered from first-generation masters. They utilize 20-bit technology and Sony's revolutionary "Super Bit Mapping" system. 1978's INFINITY was easily one of the most important albums in Journey's career up until that point. While it did spawn one sizeable hit, "Wheel in ...

Aerosmith Pump CD  (1989) Remastered

Red songs
CD $6.79  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Aerosmith surprised everyone when their 1987 album, PERMANENT VACATION, was a success, coming as it did after several releases that had done nothing but verify the belief that the band had peaked a decade earlier. PUMP (1989) followed its radio-friendly predecessor and proved the Boston quintet's comeback was no fluke. Hits like "Love in an Elevator" and "Janie's Got a Gun" were ubiquitous on MTV and radio at the time, while the album in its entirety had enough substance to warrant repeated listens. "What it Takes" closes the album and finds the band showing ...
Feline
Stranglers Feline CD  (1983) (Import) Germany; Remastered; France

Red album
CD $11.79
This is a digitally remastered and expanded French import edition. By the time of 1982's FELINE, the Stranglers had left behind the raucous, bad-boy pub-punk of their '70s albums and had moved firmly into the arena of New Wave. FELINE is dominated by synthesizers, and has the moody, lilting feel of the British electro-pop of the era. Setting the tone of the album is the opener, "Midnight Summer Dream," which floats on a wiry synth progression backed by a strummed acoustic guitar and programmed drums. The burbling post-punk pop of "It's a Small World" is haunting and highly melodic at once, while hit single "The European Female (In Celebration ...
Extreme Behavior
Hinder Extreme Behavior CD  (2005) Edited

Red CD music
CD $10.39  4.5 stars Audio Samples
It's unclear precisely which definition of their name Hinder prefer: "to impede progress" or "the outdated midwestern slang term for the buttocks." Both fit, because Hinder is an unapologetic throwback to the post-Guns 'n' Roses era of hard rock, when dudes like Poison and Motley Crue ditched their glam look in favor of a grungier "street" vibe and a tougher-edged sound. Their unapologetically smirking lyrics teeter right on the brink of outright sexism throughout songs like "Get Stoned" and "Homecoming Queen." As with the Darkness, part of the fun of EXTREME BEHAVIOR is that it's impossible to tell how seriously it's supposed to be taken. Released in September 2005, Hinder's Extreme Behavior revives the riffs and misogynistic tone of 2001 albums from Puddle of Mudd and Nickelback for a whole new batch of undergrads. This isn't so much post-grunge as it is straight-up dude rock. The artwork is a triggered response collage of lingerie and Jäger, and the music blares like a stereo left on in the keg room, all swear words and electric guitar blab. Hinder singer Austin Winkler is a stand-in for Nickelback's Chad Kroeger, and his lyrics? Like the chorus of lead single "Get Stoned" that asserts sex is better when the participants are angry and high, Winkler doesn't show a lot of class on Behavior. Hinder do try a little tenderness here and there. They sound like a heavier Wallflowers on "Nothin' Good About Goodbye," and "Lips of an Angel" carries the power ballad torch complete with a soaring solo stolen from hair metal's golden era. "Homecoming Queen" is another take on the good-girl-tarnished-by-big-bad-L.A. story; it's also a pretty obvious rewrite of Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child o' Mine." For the most part, Hinder are all about big dumb rock, the kind of stuff that's happily ignorant of common courtesy or trying much of anything new musically. [The album was also issued in a clean version.] ~ Johnny Loftus Released in September 2005, Hinder's Extreme Behavior revives the simpleton riffs and stupid misogyny of 2001 albums from Puddle of Mudd and Nickelback for a whole new batch of undergrads. This isn't even post-grunge -- it's straight-up dude rock. The artwork is a triggered response collage of boobs, lingerie, and Jäger, and the music is so obvious that it actually recedes from the ear. Like a stereo left on in the keg room, it's just a chatter of swear words and tuneless electric guitar blab. Austin Winkler sounds like a drunk shouting along with Chad Kroeger, and his lyrics? "Let's go home and get stoned/Cause the sex is so much better when you're mad," "She said she's sorry/With one finger/I said fuck that," "She said she loved the taste of ...
