Tenor-saxophonist Illinois Jacquet teams up with organist Milt Buckner and drummer Alan Dawson for this live LP that has not yet been reissued on CD. The distinctive tenor roars through "Illinois Jacquet Flies Again" and "On A Clear Day," sounds warm on "Robbin's Nest" and "I Want A Little Girl" and is heard throughout in prime form. Buckner's heavy organ sound takes a bit of getting used to (this set would have been much better if he had been on piano) but he does push Jacquet to some fiery playing. ~ Scott Yanow
The fifth and final CD the Illinois Jacquet Project collection and contains Jacquet's complete March 1966 Go Power! Live trio performances with Milt Buckner and Alan Dawson at Lennie's On The Turnpike, in West Peabody, Massachusetts. Warm and fat sound, great for the ballads, and strong like a hurricane, blues and funky when he needs to roar. Actually, he had everything. This edition also includes all five of the alternate takes from the aforementioned Illinois Jacquet And His Orchestra sessions, included here due to a lack of disc space on the collection's second CD. Go Power album
$18.19 Recorded live at the Half Note, New York, New York on November 11, 1960. Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal and Leonard Feathers.
As Rudy Van Gelder continued to establish himself as the greatest studio engineer of jazz, he started to venture out into the nightclub scene of 1960s New York City to document the bands from the Blue Note label that were growing by strength in numbers and high-quality hard to post-bop. Donald Byrd's groups were changing and evolving, but by 1960 had reverted to two years prior with the return of baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams as his main foil. In early 1960 Byrd was working with Jackie McLean and Hank Mobley, but by autumn and winter Adams had reentered the picture, joining holdovers pianist Duke Pearson and drummer Lex Humphries. Some of this material sees the spotlight on live performances at the Half Note Cafe from the previous studio recording, ...

$13.79 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Go Power songs
$40.49 Definitive's 2006 release of an 88-track compendium of Duke Ellington's Capitol recordings dating from the years 1953-1955 illuminates a period during which the man who more than anyone else had perfected the art of big-band jazz during the 1920s, '30s, and '40s had to scuffle to maintain his jazz orchestra at a time when small combos and star vocalists were getting most of the gigs and recording contracts. It is therefore fitting, perhaps, that Ellington chose to record ...

| | Knowles It's About The Melody CD (2007)
Go Power album
$9.85 Hailing from the Washington, D.C., area, pianist/composer William Knowles and bassist/lyricist Mark Saltman collaborate with vocalist Lori Williams to present ten original jazz songs. As referenced by the title, these selections are melodic to a certain degree, but not saturated or sugary. Counterpoint between voice and instruments is kept to a minimum and the songs are maintained in a similar introspective mood, mostly midtempo with no torch songs or ballads. A Latin tinge is used here and there, while saxophonist Charles Langford chimes in and solos regularly. There's a sense of deliberateness to this music; little is left to chance or spontaneity. It's nice music throughout. Knowles is a fine pianist and you would like to hear him stretch a bit on his own, and the voice of Williams, though samey in her intimate insightfulness, is pleasant enough, using vocalese during one tune, "Freetime." They step out slightly on the Wayne Shorter-esque modern swinger "The Shadow in My Mind," the turnaround tune "The Joke's on Me" (where the woman asks the man to marry her), and the sweet modal waltz "Love Echoes." The slight call-and-response during "Brighter Days" and piano/vocal unison line on "The Color of Midnight" hint at an ability to extrapolate further. Award Brownie points for not doing standards, though surely they have previously, and note promise for the future in extended forms for a group that perhaps is best heard in live performance. ~ Michael G. Nastos
