Tenor-saxophonist Illinois Jacquet teams up with organist Milt Buckner and drummer Alan Dawson for this live LP that has not yet been reissued on CD. The distinctive tenor roars through "Illinois Jacquet Flies Again" and "On A Clear Day," sounds warm on "Robbin's Nest" and "I Want A Little Girl" and is heard throughout in prime form. Buckner's heavy organ sound takes a bit of getting used to (this set would have been much better if he had been on piano) but he does push Jacquet to some fiery playing. ~ Scott Yanow
The fifth and final CD the Illinois Jacquet Project collection and contains Jacquet's complete March 1966 Go Power! Live trio performances with Milt Buckner and Alan Dawson at Lennie's On The Turnpike, in West Peabody, Massachusetts. Warm and fat sound, great for the ballads, and strong like a hurricane, blues and funky when he needs to roar. Actually, he had everything. This edition also includes all five of the alternate takes from the aforementioned Illinois Jacquet And His Orchestra sessions, included here due to a lack of disc space on the collection's second CD. For those who adored the lush textures of Doves' second album, The Last Broadcast, the seriousness of Some Cities might be a bit jarring. The ambitious indie rock trio is much more direct and exact this time out, and it's a great shift in style. In contrast to this opus, optimism ruled on The Last Broadcast, which soared with a majestic celestial setting of bright choruses, vibrant electronic beats, and gushing guitar riffs. Some Cities percolates with more of a hopeful but grounded spirit, an English spirit. The band's native Manchester comes into view. Shades of ash and cinder surround Doves' ...

Hailing from the Washington, D.C., area, pianist/composer William Knowles and bassist/lyricist Mark Saltman collaborate with vocalist Lori Williams to present ten original jazz songs. As referenced by the title, these selections are melodic to a certain degree, but not saturated or sugary. Counterpoint between voice and instruments is kept to a minimum and the songs are maintained in a similar introspective mood, mostly midtempo with no torch songs or ballads. A Latin tinge is used here and there, while saxophonist Charles Langford chimes in and solos regularly. There's a sense of deliberateness to this music; little is left to chance or spontaneity. It's nice music throughout. Knowles is a fine pianist and you would like to hear him stretch a bit on his own, and the voice of Williams, though samey in her intimate insightfulness, is pleasant enough, using vocalese during one tune, "Freetime." They step out slightly on the Wayne Shorter-esque modern swinger "The Shadow in My Mind," the turnaround tune "The Joke's on Me" (where the woman asks the man to marry her), and the sweet modal waltz "Love Echoes." The slight call-and-response during "Brighter Days" and piano/vocal unison line on "The Color of Midnight" hint at an ability to extrapolate further. Award Brownie points for not doing standards, though surely they have previously, and note promise for the future in extended forms for a group that perhaps is best heard in live performance. ~ Michael G.
