Digitally restored and re-mastered, this controversial classic by Lina Wertmller explores themes of sex, politics and role reversals when a man and woman of different social classes are left stranded on a deserted Mediterranean island. Starring Giancarlo Giannini, Mariangela Melato. Raffaela, a fiery and independent Italian factory owner, gets stranded on a deserted, edenic island with a virile yacht hand who has the uncanny knack of reducing women to sexual objects. She succumbs to his strong and forceful masculinity, and falls madly in love. Then comes the moment of their rescue and exile from paradise, when returning to society forces them to deal with harsh, cold reality. An Italian film which traces the relationship that develops between a rich, selfish woman and a slovenly sailor when they become shipwrecked. Full title (English): "Swept Away (By an Unusual Destiny in the Blue Sea of August)." Full title (Italian): "Travolti da un Insolito Destino Nell' Azzurro Mare d'Agosto."
Color by Technicolor. Swept Away Reviews: "Giannini, looking like the ancient mariner, and Mariangela Melato excel as the couple who loathe each other so much it's inevitable they'll fall in love."

$12.85 Based on the journals of Brother Gaspar de Carvajal, AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD is director Werner Herzog's hallucinatory tale of Spanish colonialists searching for El Dorado, the legendary city of gold, in 16th-century Peru. When the travellers reach an impasse, a scouting party is assembled to search for any traces of the mythical empire. As they attempt to forge their way through the dense jungle, more and more of the party falls ill while their ruthless leader, Don Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski), grows increasingly insane.
Widely considered to be Herzog's finest film, AGUIRRE, which shares much in common with Francis Ford Coppola's APOCALYPSE NOW, highlights the director's visionary approach to filmmaking. Like Coppola's film, accounts of AGUIRRE's ...

$15.45 The feature film debut of Hayao Miyazaki (NAUSICA OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, PRINCESS MONONOKE), THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO depicts one adventure of the master thief Lupin and his rough-around-the-edges gunman, Jigen. Something of a cross between Batman, James Bond, and Cary Grant's character in TO CATCH A THIEF, Lupin is a suave ladies' man who is also given to feats of athletic daring, aided by a gadget filled belt that gets him out of more than a few scrapes. The plot has Lupin and Jigen traveling to the sleepy little country of Cagliostro and coming to the aid of the unwilling fiance of the diabolical Count Cagliostro. After CAGLIOSTRO, Miyazaki stopped creating "slapstick" feature films in favor of more serious fare; CAGLIOSTRO shows, however, that he is quite capable of delivering the goods in this genre. Based on the Lupin comics by the artist Monkey Punch, CAGLIOSTRO is a great heist/chase film that surpasses most similar live action fare and breezes by with more than a couple of inventive set pieces, as well as some excellent comic dialogue.

$10.29 Set in modern Mississippi, MONSTER'S BALL subtly examines the impact of personal loss and the transforming power of human connection. The movie begins in the state penitentiary's death row, where father-and-son prison guards Hank (Billy Bob Thornton) and Sonny Grotowski (Heath Ledger) administer the execution of a black death-row inmate Lawrence Musgrove (Sean Combs), who leaves behind a wife, Leticia (Halle Berry), and son, Tyrell (Coronji Calhoun). When both Hank and Leticia's children subsequently die, the two grieving parents are accidentally thrust together, where they begin to find comfort and eventually a form of redemption.
Employing a languid pace and minimalist dialogue, MONSTER'S BALL slowly moves forward on the strength of the cast's performances (including a supporting turn from Peter Boyle as Hank's ailing racist ...

Swept Away review
$15.09 This historical melodrama, a true rarity for Alfred Hitchcock, was the last film produced by Hitchcock's own Transatlantic Pictures. Set in 1831 Australia, the film takes Hitchcock's enduring fascination with the underdog despised by the world and applies it to a social drama of class and wealth stretched across the British empire. In the past, Sam Flusky (Joseph Cotten) was an Irish stablehand brash enough to elope with the aristocratic daughter of the estate, Lady Henrietta (Ingrid Bergman). When her brother tried to stop them he was killed, and Sam was convicted of his murder. The film finds Sam and Henrietta resettled in Sydney. Sam has grown wealthy, and Henrietta has taken to drinking, both in a futile attempt to erase the memory and the stigma of the murder. When Henrietta's handsome distant cousin, Charles Adare (Michael Wilding), comes to visit he tries to console and revitalize her. But Adare falls in love with his cousin while a scheming Milly (Margaret ...
