In 1973, the members of Mott the Hoople were tired. Island Records had dropped the band after three albums, as sales were low and audience interest was almost non-existent. But the band had a famous fan in David Bowie, who offered to write them one single to give them a leg up. That single was the chart-topping "All the Young Dudes," a glitter-era wink-wink celebration of male bonding that name-checked chart-toppers T. Rex and repositioned the once-laddish band as glammy, androgynous scenesters. Obviously, an album was called for.
Produced by Bowie and opening with a smoking cover of "Sweet Jane" that played a major role in raising public awareness of the Velvet Underground, ALL THE YOUNG DUDES is a brassy, loud, obnoxious--in the best possible sense--rock & roll album. "Sucker" and "One of the Boys" recall the hit, while "Jerkin' Crocus" and "Sea Diver" are as odd as the band's earlier material. An amazing mid-career transformation.
Includes bonus tracks.Rolling Stone (p.70) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he heavy riffs and hand claps of 'Sucker' and guitarist Mick Ralphs' stadium-ready sludge fest 'Ready for Love/After Lights' gave that Bowie-produced album its vital variety." Rolling Stone (12/7/72, p.63) - "...an extravagant amount of power-driven, rock & roll....they're bound to make it on the strength of this record..." Uncut (p.114) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "[Bowie's] studio craft sheered up their sound, highlighting Ian Hunter's more focused material..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.125) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "'Momma's Little Jewel' and a cover of 'Sweet Jane' reveal staying power." Mott----everything you've heard is true This new edition is a spectacular presentation of one of the finest albums of the 70's (and one of the finest albums ever---it REALLY is that good). Every song is wonderful in it's own way, with I Wish I Was Your Mother just impeccable (the finest song Hunter has written, I believe)and the playing and production are wonderful. Things would never be the same after this (Mick Ralphs left to form Bad Company, another fine group, but TOTALLY different than Mott The Hoople). Legacy has done a wonderful job here---the extra cuts and mastering are wonderful. History preserved for future generations to rediscover.

A Classic David Bowies favorite band was Mott the Hoople and for good reason, they were ahead of their time. When he heard they were breaking up he ran to them and offered Suffergette City if they would stay together. Wasn't good enough but All the Young Dudes was. It went to #3 on the charts and stayed awhile. Great song, Great Album, Great Band. This CD deserves to be in your collection. Submitted by mottrocks (Sunny Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) All The Young Dudes
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all ...

All The Young Dudes
$7.59 Digitally remastered by Larry Keyes (CBS Records Studio, New York, New York).
Mott The Hoople are often associated with the '70s glam movement, but their only real connection to that style was their involvement with David Bowie. In fact, the band was much more closely tied to the post-folkie work of Bob Dylan. Singer Ian Hunter had his British version of Dylan's transcendent moan down to a science. Though they were essentially a pure rock & roll band (and one of the main influences on the Clash), Mott sported detailed lyrics informed by the Dylan school, almost to the point ...

All The Young Dudes
$9.89 Digitally remastered edition of Mott The Hoople's swan song, originally released in 1974. The follow-up to their critically acclaimed "Mott" album featured a refocused band, following the departure of Mick Ralphs (who left to join Bad Company) and the arrival of Ariel Bender (aka Luther Grosvenor, from Spooky Tooth). It was Hunter's show though and all the stops were pulled for this manic thrust of energy. Kicking off with the goodtime rocker "The Golden Age Of Rock N Roll", we immediately plunge into the dramatic "Marionette" and soon into the manic "Crash Street Kids". ...
| | Electric Light Orchestra A New World Record - Expanded Edition CD (1976) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
All The Young Dudes
$7.59 Also available in a 3-pack with FACE THE MUSIC and DISCOVERY.
1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album ...

All The Young Dudes
$11.49 The Presets' first full-length record differs slightly from their more happy-go-lucky Aussie dance compatriots, mostly for aesthetic reasons. The detached nature of Beams is more about subtle darkness and underlying sinister intentions, as evidenced on the slow-building opener, "Steamworks" -- which begins with the bassline from "Billie Jean" and moves into much more explosive sonic territory (and a rave horn for good measure). Beams represents a uneasy yet unforgettable ...
